Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The abstract is way long!

Why only one variety of rice used in this study? and why "Xindao 16"?

L. 155 and afterward, "Gs" to "gs"

ANOVA results representing the interactions are missing (G*E, etc)

L. 283, 326 and 412, please add the sample size (N=?)

In the manuscript by Xu et al., the authors aimed to study the effects of water stress on fluorescence parameters and photosynthetic characteristics under different irrigation conditions. In this study, the authors showed the effects of water stress at the tillering stage on yield and also provide water-saving cultivation of drip irrigation covered rice. In the current manuscript, authors used plant physiological parameters to justify their hypothesis and results. From their experiments, the authors concluded that Water control in the W2 treatment at the tillering stage is conducive to the improvement of water-use efficiency of drip-irrigated rice. The authors claim that this stage helps achieve the goal of high quality, high yield, and high efficiency.

Here are some comments/recommendations to make the manuscript better

Since the study is using rice as a model, please highlight the importance of rice for it. Input this data in the introduction part of the manuscript. Avoid sentence repetition in the introduction. Line 65-68: Merge sentence and italicize ‘a’ in chlorophyll a and ‘a/b’ Authors are encouraged to include recent and references from diverse labs. This is much encouraged as some references cited are in Chinese only that is hard to a non-native reader. Figures 1 and 2 are not the main focus of the paper and can be moved to the supplementary section. Please include the temperature graphs (experimental seasons) in a single graph. Please indicate all measurable units on the y-axis to all the graphs (e.g.: 311-316). All figure X and Y-axis scale must be the same for a better comparison. References are not properly cited. Please format references. Tables: If possible can authors highlight significant valves in table 4/5. Please indicate that a random plot design was used in the experiment in choosing to sample (in the sampling process). Did the authors measure any other physiological parameters in refereeing to leaf or plant Physiology? Like stomatal aperture, stomatal density? The object of the study should be more précised that highlights its significance and widen the study’s impact.

In this Manuscript, author explains about Effects of Water Stress on Fluorescence Parameters and Photosynthetic Characteristics of Drip Irrigation and Plastic Film Mulching of Rice. They have carried out a two-year trial and three water gradients were investigated. I have few concerns about this MS. I will list them below.

Major:

The title is confusing. It is written about Water Stress on Fluorescence Parameters and Photosynthetic Characteristics. Other is Drip Irrigation and Plastic Film Mulching of Rice. The word Plastic Film Mulching appears only once in material and method figure apart from the title which is quite strange. If there are changes in the chlorophyll content which is obvious why authors didn’t provide any morphological images of the green and yellow colored leaf? I have serious doubts about the result. In my experiment drought and salt stress never affect rice Fv/FM ratio like cold stress. I never had Fv/Fm value more than 0.87 for mature green healthy rice leave, how can the author claim value of 1 in table 4.

Minor:

At L58 change improve produce to improve product. At L73 High to A high. At L79 drip irrigated to drip-irrigated. At L80 characteristics has to characteristics have. At L88 form to from. At L88 May 2018 to September 2019 or what? Explain clearly.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

My concerns are addressed.

Reviewer 2 Report

Dear Authors

Though the revised cover letter says they are revised.

The following two points are not addressed.

Figures 1 and 2 are not the main focus of the paper and can be moved to the supplementary section. Please include the temperature graphs (experimental seasons) in a single graph.

Tables: If possible can authors highlight significant valves in table 4/5.
