Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue, dedicated to the association between diabetes and breast cancer, is now open for submissions. Although not officially a complication of diabetes, breast cancer incidence is increased in diabetic patients. The complications of diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome are vascular in nature and characterized by a dysfunctional endothelium and increased inflammation in tissues—phenomena that are intimately related and occur simultaneously in cancer progression, in addition to the direct effects of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance on breast cancer cells. A rapidly growing body of evidence connects hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, glucose intolerance and even high postprandial blood glucose levels (high glycemic load / high glycemic index of food) with cancer risk and progression. Every 14 seconds, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, resulting in more than 2 million new cases and 600,000 deaths each year worldwide. More than 400,000 of newly diagnosed women are also diabetic and have a poorer prognosis. A better understanding of the connection between diabetes and breast cancer, as well as new approaches to preventing and controlling breast cancer in diabetic patients, are urgently needed.

This Special Issue will discuss recent developments in understanding the pathways and mechanistic details of the association between diabetes and breast cancer, aiming to alert readers of the journal to the scale and significance of the problem by sharing clinical and basic observations.

Original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Metabolic changes in breast cancer cells in diabetes;
  • Diabetes and breast cancer microenvironment;
  • Obesity and breast cancer;
  • Specific signaling and regulatory pathways connecting diabetes and breast cancer;
  • New approaches to preventing and inhibiting breast cancer by regulating effects of hyperglycemia.

I look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Cancers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
