Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Magnetic nanofluids and thin films are unique fluids and thin films consisting of magnetic nanoparticles. The typical examples of magnetic nanofluids are magnetic fluids, ferrofluids, and magnetic liquids, which are also referred to as magnetic soft materials. They have the particular physical properties of superparamagnetism and fluidity. Due to the fluidity of magnetic nanofluids, they are easy to integrate with fibers or to use to infiltrate microholes and microcavities. On the other hand, magnetic nanofluids and thin films are attractive materials possessing several versatile magneto-optical properties, such as a tunable refractive index, magneto-volume variation, tunable light transmission and scattering, which have attracted much attention in optical and photonic fields in recent decades. Combining magnetic nanofluids and thin films with fiber or other photonic structures is promising for realizing novel optofluidic photonic devices and applications.

Knowledge and understanding of the unique properties of magnetic nanofluids and thin films and the corresponding physical mechanisms is critical to their photonic applications. We invite authors to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that seek to stimulate continuing efforts to understand the properties of magnetic nanofluids and thin films and the development of photonic applications based on magnetic nanofluids and thin films. We are particularly interested in articles that explore the photonic properties of magnetic nanofluids and thin films and their novel photonic applications. This Special Issue focuses on “Optics and Photonics of Magnetic Nanofluids and Thin Films”. The topics of interest for this Special Issue, in particular, include (but are not limited to):

  • Photonic properties and applications of magnetic nanofluids and thin films;
  • Novel properties and applications of magnetic nanofluids and thin films;
  • Light scattering and extinction of magnetic nanofluids and thin films;
  • Optical transmission and propagation of magnetic nanofluids and thin films;
  • Sensing properties and applications based on magnetic nanofluids and thin films;
  • Magneto-optical properties and photonic applications of other magnetic nanofluids and composite materials;
  • Any other aspects of magnetic nanofluids and thin films.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
