Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) integrate sensing, computation, control technologies and networking with physical entities. CPSs also interact with the environment and infrastructure by connecting to a network of multiple devices. Advances in CPSs have the potential to affect various technologies and applications such as connected and autonomous vehicles, crowdsourced data applications, cooperative robots, the Internet of Things, smart grids, cybersecurity solutions and smart cities. Optimization and control play a great role in the modeling, design and analysis of cyber-physical systems (CPSs). Optimization and control are used to provide responsive, stable, resilient, reliable, secure and efficient systems. Both traditional, model-based control approaches and modern, artificial-intelligence-based approaches have been used for this purpose.

The aim of this Special Issue will be to feature articles on the optimization and control of cyber-physical systems and how they will impact technology and society in the future. The articles might span across topics including networked control systems, resilience technologies, the distributed control of multi-agent systems, connected and autonomous vehicle applications, cybersecurity applications, unmanned aerial vehicle applications, sensor and control technologies for cyber-physical systems, and technologies enabling AI-based optimization, assurance, and safety mechanisms.

Within the above dimensions, the scope of the Special Issue welcomes high-quality original research and review articles that cover a broad range of topics related to the optimization and control of cyber-physical systems. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Networked control systems;
  • Cyber-attacks on cyber-physical systems;
  • State estimators;
  • Fault-tolerant controllers and observers;
  • Optimization of CPSs and applications in smart grids;
  • Deep learning for autonomous vehicles;

  • Safety assurance of cyber-physical systems;
  • Edge computing for cyber-physical systems’ control and optimization;
  • Convex optimization;
  • Multi-objective optimization;
  • Multi-time scale optimization;
  • Smart city applications;
  • Validation and verification of cyber-physical systems;
  • Crowdsensing for cyber-physical systems’ control and optimization;

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Electronics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
