Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Current globalisation trends have placed the marine shipping industry in the foremost position to carry goods from the one end of the world to the other due to a number of advantages over other transportation systems. Naval architects and ship designers are working hard to meet the ever-increasing marine transportation demand through the innovation of energy-efficient, cost-effective but large carrying capacity vessels while keeping the emissions level low. In contemporary ship design practices, ship designers use various sensor-based technologies to gather full-scale hull performance data in real-time operational conditions or to study the scaled performance of a hull through a series of laboratory tests. The shipping industries also gather a large volume of practical data for predictive analysis of fuel consumption, efficient cargo operation, fleet management, future market trend, and further investment. Whether it is to design a hull or to operate a ship, the marine industries will need to process large volumes of data effectively for an informed decision-making process. This exercise is better known as Big Data Analytics for the marine industries. In this Special Issue, we encourage you to submit your high-quality original research articles based on Big Data Analytics on, amongst others, the following topics:

  • Ship design and performance analysis;
  • Ship motions and hydrodynamic loads;
  • Shipbuilding, ship repair, ship management, and fleet planning practices;
  • Ship safety, reliability, and security;
  • Ship voyage information and communication, route planning;
  • Cargo handling, operation, shipment, and port management;
  • Cargo losses and/or damages;
  • Ship structural health monitoring, condition assessment, and decision-making.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
