Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Membrane separation is now deemed a highly efficient technology in the sectors of sea water desalination, water treatment, gas separation, clean energy production, etc. Membrane materials with high permeance and high selectivity are the key to boosting membranes’ real-world applications. Recently, low-dimensional materials (0D, 1D, and 2D materials) have found broad opportunities as membrane materials. Low-dimensional materials may involve, for instance, 0D quantum dots, 1D nanorods or nanotubes, 2D layered materials, and so on. These materials may work as fillers in membranes to form composite ones or assemble to form self-sanding membranes. The low-dimensional character of these materials may introduce distinct properties, such as high surface area, tunable channels, and easy functionalization, to the membrane materials to greatly improve their separation performances.

This Special Issue will cover recent developments in the field of separation membranes based on low-dimensional materials. The articles presented in this Special Issue will cover various topics, ranging from but not limited to the fabrication, characterization, and separation performance of membranes with low-dimensional materials (either composite or inorganic membranes). Topics are open to the various applications of membranes in the field of gas, liquid, and ion separations.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
