Emerging Directions in Eating Disorders Management, Treatment and Research

Dear Colleagues,

Eating disorders are serious psychiatric illnesses characterized by severe disturbances in eating behaviors and associated cognitive features. The main phenotypes are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. These disorders have significant psychiatric comorbidity and medical morbidity and mortality if untreated. Early identification and multidisciplinary treatment are critical to optimize outcomes. Ongoing research aims to elucidate disease mechanisms, identify risk factors, develop novel treatments, and ultimately improve the prognosis of these disorders.

This Special Issue welcomes original research articles, reviews, hypotheses and theories, perspectives, brief research reports, and opinions that address the following subtopics:

• Advances in understanding the neurobiology and genetics underlying eating disorders;
• Novel treatment approaches, including emerging third-wave psychological treatments, psychosocial interventions, and pharmacotherapy;
• Special considerations in treating eating disorders across different demographics, such as adolescents, males, LGBTI+, and diverse ethnic groups;
• The role of culture and social media in the development and maintenance of disordered eating;
• Weight stigma in eating disorder treatment;
• New directions in prevention and early intervention;
• Case series or report;
• Critique, propositions, and discussion on clinical guidelines;
• Development of individualized treatments;
• Managing medical risk in eating disorders in a comprehensive approach;
• New hope for refractory eating disorders;
• Training the next generation of eating disorder specialists;
• Clinical pathways.
