Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) infections are a tremendous issue in contemporary medicine. Community-acquired meningitis still represents a major health problem in developing and developed countries. Hospital-acquired CSF infections have gained increasing attention because they are frequently caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, they affect patients who already suffer from debilitating diseases (therefore carrying high mortality rates), and furthermore they are preventable by implementing tight hospital protocols.

In recent years, the fight against these infections has involved the coordinated effort of many healthcare professionals. Microbiologists have developed faster and more efficient etiological assays and novel, effective vaccines. Pharmacologists have tried to discover novel drugs with enhanced CNS penetration or to adapt old-fashioned but effective compounds to current medicine. Neurosurgeons have optimized surgical procedures in order to minimize the hazard of CSF infection. Public health specialists have developed efficient hospital protocols, to be carefully adopted by all professional figures involved in patient care. Infectious disease specialists have played a special role in coordinating all these efforts and in ensuring a tight antibiotic stewardship policy.

In this Special Issue, we aim to provide an up-to-date state-of-the-art of the treatment and prevention of CSF infections, highlighting the work that has been done so far. Moreover, we will host innovative research papers, which will stimulate scientists across many laboratories to continue their fight for a world without infections.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page.
