Dear Colleagues,
Polymeric materials of biological origin can be classified into two main groups: bio-based polymers and biopolymers. Bio-based polymers are produced via (bio)chemical polymerization of bio-based monomers, while biopolymers are derived directly from various types of producers, such as microorganisms, plants, etc. Over the past few decades, these materials have become more attractive because of their eco-friendly character, abundance of raw materials, and low-cost production. Considering the need for additional efforts to face the environmental challenges worldwide, as well as the impending economic crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which follows the decade-long economic crisis of 2007, it is clear that the need to increase the usage rates of polymers of biological origin is more urgent than ever. An industry sector that could benefit from the use of advanced materials of biological origin, while contributing to the improvement of environmental conditions, but also to the production of low-cost goods for people, is that of biomedical applications. Within this context, we invite the submission of original research papers and review articles presenting the latest achievements and trends in biopolymers, bio-based polymers, and their composites for medical and pharmaceutical applications.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
