Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Essential oils (EOs) are highly complex chemical mixtures involving several hundreds of individual volatile compounds that are extracted from aromatic and fruit plants and are responsible for their characteristic aroma. The complex composition of any EO may depend on which plant part is used; they are also subject to frequent seasonally and geographically driven fluctuations.

EOs have been widely used for flavouring food and drink, pharmaceutical products, and fragrances for cosmetic and beauty products. EOs and their constituents have received increasing attention as a good source of several bioactive compounds that possess antioxidative, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-parasitic and antiviral properties. The biological activities of EOs are strictly linked to their chemical composition. Recently, innovative analytical techniques have considerably progressed the identification of  new compounds in EOs with different activities.

In this Special Issue, we intend to invite frontline researchers and authors to submit original research and review articles on the topic of EOs, prospecting their chemical composition, biological activity and future trends of their uses in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries.

Special Issue articles should fulfil all the normal requirements of any individual Molecules article and should be of relevance to a wide international readership. Authors should note that the same  quality, originality, and significance criteria apply to articles in Special Issues.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
