Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The journal Photonics is running a Special Issue titled “Biomedical Optics and Its Applications” with Dr. Meng-Tsan Tsai and Dr. Hsiang-Chieh Lee serving as the Guest Editors. Biomedical optics has attracted a lot of attention by using visible or near-infrared light for various biomedical applications such as laser treatment, optical imaging, and optical sensing. For laser treatment, optical energy can be accurately controlled, and the recovery time of biological tissue can be reduced in comparison to other treatment modalities. Optical imaging approaches can provide high imaging resolutions, enabling morphological changes in the early stages of diseases to be detected. Moreover, optical sensing can identify differences in the optical properties of materials, including biological tissues.

The goal of this Special Issue is to explore research findings and technical developments in biomedical optics. Contributions focused on related applications in cells, animals, and human subjects are also encouraged. This Special Issue covers, but is not limited to, the following topics:

Laser therapy
Optical coherence tomography
Microscopy
Diffuse and fluorescence tomography
NIR spectroscopy
Photoacoustic tomography
Multispectral imaging and sensing
Biosensor

Review articles and regular research articles related to biomedical optics are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Photonics is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Due to the improvement of living standards, people’s attention to health has gradually increased. More and more people are willing to spend money and time on health management. This article reviews work on the vital signs monitoring system based on fiber optic interferometers, including the design of sensor structures, signal demodulation methods and data analysis. After a large number of trials, the system can achieve long-term stable heart rate (HR), respiration rate (RR) and body temperature monitoring, and the collected data can be used for health analysis. Due to the high sensitivity, low cost, and light weight of the interferometric fiber optic sensor, it can be integrated under a mattress or a cushion, which is very suitable for daily use. The system has great application prospects in the field of healthcare. Full article
