Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cellulose-based materials can serve as renewable and environmentally friendly resources, to make recyclable (or degradable) materials that surround our daily life. Examples progress from additives (e.g., rheology modifiers) for food, concrete, and paint to insulation materials for constructive applications, and functional coating materials. Over the past decade, we have further witnessed strong progress in new types of cellulose-based materials, such as nanocelluloses or cellulosic nanomaterials. At the same time, scientists have increasingly focused on widening the scope of paper-based materials to enable new applications, with the aim to transfer functional paper from traditional applications such as packaging, graphics or hygienic paper into new types of paper, such as biomedical diagnostic devices, or paper-based electronics.

This Special Issue on “Cellulose- and Paper-based functional materials” captures very recent advances by covering:

  • Novel cellulose-based polymers, improved new and/or green synthesis protocols, and transfer of such polymers into new polymeric materials;
  • Functional coatings of cellulose-based materials, including stimulus-responsive materials;
  • Functional paper-based materials for constructive applications, mechanics of fibers and paper, and composite materials made of paper for constructive applications;
  • Functional paper-based materials for instrument-less analytics and diagnostics, paper microfluidics, paper-based fuel cells, and electronics.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Polymers is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
