Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The considerable amounts of wastewater generated by the ever-growing world population and associated industrial expansion represent significant environmental and economic challenges and could hinder sustainable development. Major industries such as pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, petrochemical, textile, automotive manufacturing, and the oil and gas industry produce significant amounts of wastewater with high concentrations of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons that can have detrimental and harmful effects on plant and aquatic life, as well as the surface and groundwater sources. These industries must manage their wastewater properly to meet environmental regulations and reduce the impact on the environment. Therefore, effective and feasible methods for treating these wastewaters are needed. Electrochemical techniques, such as electroflotation, electrochemical disinfection, electrochemical precipitation, electrochemical reduction, and electrocoagulation, have several advantages, including energy efficiency, minimal chemical requirements, and the potential for on-site treatment. This Special Issue attempts to highlight the most recent research on the application of electrochemical techniques for the treatment of several types of industrial wastewater. Research papers will include the fundamentals, applications, and scale-up of electrochemical wastewater treatment. Submissions on related topics such as sustainability, LCA, and the circular economy are also encouraged.

Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Electrocoagulation and electroflocculation: investigating the application of electrocoagulation and electroflocculation for the removal of contaminants from wastewater.
  2. Sustainability, environmental impact, and life cycle assessment: Investigating the options to improve the energy efficiency and sustainability of electrochemical water treatment processes. Additionally, address the EIA and LCA of these processes.
  3. Electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs): assessing novel EAOPs for the degradation of organic pollutants in water, such as electro-Fenton and electrochemical ozonation.
  4. Electrochemical desalination: research on electrochemical desalination technologies, such as capacitive deionization (CDI) and electrodialysis reversal (EDR), for the production of fresh water or treatment of reject brine.
  5. Electrochemical remediation of emerging contaminants: studying the removal of emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and other compounds using electrochemical methods.
  6. Electrochemical recovery of resources: research on the recovery of valuable resources, such as metals or nutrients, from wastewater using electrochemical techniques.
  7. Electrochemical filtration membranes: development of electrochemical filtration membranes for the removal of contaminants and fouling mitigation.
  8. Scale-up and commercialization: studying the scalability and economic feasibility of electrochemical water treatment technologies for large-scale applications.
  9. Electrochemical hybrid systems: exploring hybrid systems that combine electrochemical treatment with other advanced water treatment processes for enhanced performance.
