Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

System and software safety in cyber-physical systems is becoming increasingly central in many industries, and is often critical in societal infrastructure, enabling applications in smart transport, smart energy, smart health, smart manufacturing, and smart cities. The systems are becoming ever more complex, connected, and autonomous, and the software continues to develop. This poses many engineering challenges, even for mature organizations, requiring approaches that advance beyond established best practices.

This Special Issue solicits papers on engineering methods, processes, and organizational approaches for enabling and assuring the safe deployment of cyber-physical systems. Relevant topics include (but are not limited to) systems and software architectures, safe and transparent artificial intelligence, agile approaches to safety, hazard analysis for connected/autonomous vehicles, and safety case argumentation/structure. Relevant integration issues for engineering organizations, such as novel approaches on eliciting safety-relevant information from already deployed systems, and the co-engineering between safety engineers and other engineering disciplines such as security engineers, are also of interest.

The Special Issue is organized together with the Scandinavian conference on safety critical systems and software (SCSSS2022), which has become a central meeting place for safety experts from industrial, public, and academic organizations. We encourage authors interested in publishing in this Special Issue to also submit a presentation to the first day of the conference, which will feature distinguished keynotes, industrial, and research presentations.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Safety is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
