Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article surveys and summarizes previously published studies on the vertical extension of buildings using wooden construction technologies. Conducted literature survey focuses on the case of Finland. The article concludes by presenting the benefits of additional floor construction and the main stages of the process. As the authors declared, they aim to increase the acceptability and attractiveness of additional wooden floors, resulting in its widespread use in Finland and other countries.
The article is of interest to the general public and researchers, serving as a solid introduction for further in-depth literature study. The entry gives a comprehensive view of the topic, but some issues should be clarified and elaborated.
The survey of the literature should mention research on the vertical extension to buildings also conducted in other countries (e.g., research lead by: Vesna Žegarac Leskovar from Slovenia, Anne Landin from Sweden, Gerardo Wadel from Spain) or dealing with various typologies (e.g., “A Modular Timber Construction System for the Sustainable Vertical Extension of Office Buildings”).
The article concludes by presenting the benefits of additional floor construction without addressing the issue of wooden building technology. It would be desirable to indicate which are further strengthened by timber construction. In order to support widespread use of this technology in other countries, local context should be presented more in detail, addressing issues of ownership of the building, stakeholders their roles and decision-making area, tendering procedures used, type of upgraded buildings.
Additionally, to render the whole picture of the presented practice, the article should describe drawbacks and challenges. That would allow defining the limits of renovation processes with the addition of floors. Moreover, images, diagrams, sections, or any other graphical elements presenting successful Finish cases would support the popularization of the concept.
For the reader unfamiliar with the Finish fire code (lines 55 and 154), it would be helpful to describe briefly introduced changes supporting the construction of additional floors out of timber. In some countries, fire regulations may be one of the main obstacles to the widespread popularization of this practice.

Reviewer 2 Report

This chapter examines the construction of wooden additional floors in Finland as a choice for real estate development and renovation which increases energy efficiency and functionality at a reduced additional cost.

The chapter is well written and documented.

The authors are advised to address the following issues in order to further improve their presentation:

It would be helpful to add a section regarding the fire safety measures (fire retardants etc) specific to wooden construction, as compared to the respective for steel frames.

Also, a small section on the specific insulation and water protection techniques for wooden structures would enhance the completeness of the chapter.

Finally, the case of composite structures based on a wooden frame could also be mentioned with one or two references.

Reviewer 3 Report

This entry concern the application of wooden additional floor in residential and commercial buildings. Although the topic is interesting, the organization of the research should improve before publication. Some of the comments are summarized as follows.

1- The introduction section should improve by including the current state of the wooden floor technology. The last paragraph of the introduction should rewrite.

2- The sub-heading 3, only summarized the advantages of the wooden additional floor(s), it is recommended to discuss further.
