Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the continuous growth of deep learning models and datasets in terms of size and complexity, deep learning is extremely computation-intensive, memory-intensive and energy-hungry. For example, training GPT-3 would take 36 years using 8 NVIDIA V100 GPUs or 7 months with 512 V100 GPUs, consuming roughly 190,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The application of photonic approaches in order to run deep learning algorithms has recently gained heightened interest due to the innovative advantages of photonics, such as its high bandwidth, low power consumption, and efficient data movement. The future of deep learning is photonic. This Special Issue, entitled "Deep Learning Algorithms with Photonic Integration", aims to compile cutting-edge research at the intersection of photonics and artificial intelligence. This emerging field explores integrating photonic components with deep learning algorithms, offering promising solutions for a wide range of applications.

This Special Issue welcomes the submission of papers related to the acceleration of AI using photonic technologies, with particular reference to the following aspects:

  • Deep learning algorithms with photonic computing;
  • Deep learning algorithms with photonic communications;
  • Energy efficiency;
  • Performance evaluations;
  • Hardware design;
  • Simulation approaches;
  • Software design;
  • Parallel models and algorithms.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Algorithms is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
