Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, the field of restorative dentistry has witnessed big advancements derived from groundbreaking research in dental biomaterials. This Special Issue aims to explore the cutting-edge developments in biomaterials and technologies that redefine the landscape of restorative dentistry. Emphasizing sustainability and environmental consciousness, we seek contributions that push the boundaries of conventional materials towards greener, longer-lasting, and more dentist- and patient-friendly solutions.

Key areas of interest:

  • Biomimetic materials: Investigating restorative materials inspired by natural structures and processes, mimicking the mechanical and aesthetic properties of natural teeth for enhanced compatibility and performance.
  • Bioactive materials: Exploring the development of dental restorative biomaterials with inherent biological activity, promoting tissue regeneration, antimicrobial properties, and fostering improved integration with the oral environment.
  • Sustainable design: Addressing the environmental impacts of dental restorative biomaterials by researching and implementing sustainable practices, reducing the carbon footprint, and ensuring eco-friendly end-of-life disposal.
  • Advanced technologies: Showcasing the application of emerging technologies such as 3D printing, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence in the design, fabrication, and customization of contemporary restorative materials.
  • Regulatory compliance and approval processes: Exploring the regulatory landscape surrounding dental biomaterials, emphasizing compliance with international standards and navigating the approval processes to ensure the safety and efficacy of new restorative materials.
  • Clinical validation and evidence-based practice: Emphasizing the importance of rigorous clinical validation for new restorative materials, promoting evidence-based practice and establishing a robust foundation for the widespread adoption of these materials within the dental community.
  • Interdisciplinary collaboration in restorative dentistry: Encouraging collaborative efforts between dentists, materials scientists, engineers, and regulatory experts to foster an interdisciplinary approach that addresses the multifaceted challenges in the development, testing, and implementation of novel restorative materials.
  • Ethical considerations in research: Investigating the ethical aspects surrounding research methodologies, participant consent, and data transparency for new technologies and materials in restorative dentistry.
  • Education and training in new restorative materials and technologies: Highlighting the importance of integrating education on the latest restorative materials and technologies into dental curricula and dental associations, ensuring that practitioners are well equipped to adopt and implement innovations responsibly.
  • Post-market surveillance: Exploring methodologies for the robust post-market surveillance of dental biomaterials, monitoring long-term performance, reporting on the longevity of restorations, identifying potential adverse effects, and facilitating timely interventions to guarantee ongoing patient safety.
  • Patient-centered decision making: Investigating approaches to involving patients in decision-making processes concerning restorative materials, emphasizing informed consent, patient education, and shared decision making for a patient-centric approach to restorative treatment.

This Special Issue invites researchers, scientists, and practitioners to contribute their expertise and findings to drive the evolution of restorative dentistry towards a sustainable, patient-centric, and environmentally conscious future. Additionally, this Special Issue recognizes the significance of addressing not only the scientific and technical aspects but also the ethical and professional dimensions that shape the landscape of restorative dentistry. Contributions that explore these key areas will contribute to a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities involved in advancing the field responsibly.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
