Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

You are invited to contribute to a Special Issue of the journal Applied Sciences, titledNatural and Synthetic Compounds as Antioxidant, Cytoprotective, or Cytotoxic Agents in Human Erythrocytes”.

Red blood cells (RBCs) are the most numrous cells and are key components of the circulation system in human blood. Their morphology, ultrastructure, and biochemical and molecular functions have been extensively studied. It has been confirmed that the RBC membrane consists of about 20 major proteins and 850 minor ones. Many different advanced methodologies have been proposed in order to obtain the best characterization of the RBCs proteome. Several methods for membrane extraction, depletion techniques, fractionation strategies, and high-throughput MS analyses and nLC coupled with MALDI-TOF MS can be found in the literature.

RBCs are the targets for different compounds in the circulatory system both from endo- and exo-genous sources.

On this basis, RBCs are excellent cell models for in vitro screening of biologically active blood-contacting compounds like drugs, antioxidants, nanomaterials, and toxins on the molecular structure and function of the cell membrane.

I invite you to submit your research on these topics, in the form of original research papers, mini-reviews, and perspective articles.
