Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Pediatric rheumatology embraces a wide and heterogeneous group of autoimmune and auto-inflammatory diseases as well as several non-inflammatory forms for which the pathogenesis is often obscure. Different organs and systems can be affected, which requires multidisciplinary expertise and collaboration.

Inciting events and/or inadequate therapies may acutely complicate a rheumatological disease with severe and life-threatening events. That said, an emergency may be the first presentation of an underlying rheumatological condition.

The complexity and heterogeneity of rheumatological diseases, the infrequency of acute events in this field, and the peculiarities linked to the pediatric age make rheumatological emergencies in children a high-risk and challenging situation in terms of diagnosis, management, and treatment.

This Special Issue provides a foundation for potential life-threatening or high-risk rheumatological conditions in children, offering an overview of the different clinical presentations and highlighting those “red flag” findings that arouse early diagnostic suspicion. Diagnostic procedures and treatment options are also described.
