Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With recent developments in material sciences and engineering applications, as well as the capability to design composite parts in new technological facilities, academic researchers and manufacturers in cutting technology should share their scientific contributions. Additionally, cutting environments such as cutting process design and new adapted cutting processes are becoming more important in terms of the need for persistent improvement and developing solutions for these multifunctional materials and composites.

In general, experimental trials in the cutting of new materials–composites, in microstructures, and in surface roughness evolution have been highlighted as research targets in cutting processes.

For example, in LASER cutting processes, operational parameters such as cutting speed and accuracy and/or precision related to laser cutting trials frequently make it an extremely cost-effective and efficient option for manufacturing. Particularly, in the cutting of thin or very sensitive materials, working times and cut operations decrease with a low cutting scrap but with high-quality and low-cost production, despite disadvantages such as slag and burrs, disturbance of the cutting surface in the cutting of the thick pieces, etc. The same processes are valuable for wire EDM and water jet cutting processes.

This Special Issue will publish original research papers, review articles, case studies, short communications, and letters from a wide variety of sources dealing with all aspects of the science and technology related to the cutting processes of metallic alloys and/or matal matrix composite materials, including fibrous and particulate reinforcements.

Additonally, this Special Issue will serve as a forum for papers in the following concepts:

-Theoretical and experimental research, knowledge, and new ideas in cutting processes by laser, wire EDM, water jet cutters, and evolution of the microstructure and cutting edge, as well as damage mechanisms on the cutting edge;

-Recent developments in cutting technologies and manufacturing when carrying out different cutting processes, not limited to laser, wire EDM, and water jet cutting but evidently open to new and advanced cutting processes;

-Operational and material parameters influencing cutting processes’ final product and evolution of microstructure, phases, and composition;

-Understanding the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of the tailored of the pieces via cutting processes and degradation mechanisms of cutting through friction, wear or other dynamic loading condition and corrosion;

-The latest development of test methods considering the interplay between mechanical, physical, and chemical interactions and the ability to calculate performance and/or reliability, emphasizing on valid, accelerated performance tests and the relation between test techniques and field performance data, etc.;

-Computer–mathematical modeling, simulation to predict cutting properties, performance, durability, and reliability in service environments.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

This work presents a comprehensive research using the Taguchi method and response surface methodology (RSM) to predict surface roughness parameters in wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) manufacturing for a novel Ti–Al intermetallic based composite that was developed at Supmeca, a composite design laboratory for aeronautical applications in Paris, France. At the first stage, a detailed microstructure analysis was carried out on this composite. After that, the cutting parameters of the WEDM process were determined: Start-up voltage U, Pulse-on-time Ton, speed advance S and flushing pressure p were selected to find out their effects on surface roughness Ra. In the second stage, analyses of variance (ANOVA) were used as the statistical method to define the significance of the machining parameters. After that, an integrated method combining the Taguchi method and the response surface methodology (RSM) was used to develop a predictive model of the finish surface. The microstructure of the surface and subsurface of the cut edge, the micro-cracks, debris and craters and surface roughness of the specimens cut at the altered conditions were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 3D-Surfscan.
