Knowledge and Conservation of Peatlands and Their Biodiversity

Dear Colleagues,

Peatlands are essential for climate regulation, being capable of storing more carbon than any other terrestrial ecosystem; hosting rare, endemic, relict and threatened species; serving as custodians of water regulation and quality; and representing a keystone of the planet's environmental evolution. Yet they are intensely stressed by human activity around the world. To avoid losing their ecosystem services and aggravating the environmental emergency, conservation and restoration tools must be developed, deepening knowledge about their ecosystem functioning and showcasing conservation experiences. This Special Issue will show and discuss advances in the knowledge of peatlands and their conservation, at different temporal (palaeoenvironmental and current) and structural (habitat and species) levels, facilitating the identification of existing needs and knowledge gaps in the context of the environmental crisis.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
