Forest Edge and Insect Diversity

Dear Colleagues,

Recently, there has been an increasing interest in studying transitional zones (like ecotones). Forest edges are transition zones between adjacent habitats and they are a type of ecotone, which is interpreted both on the meso-spatial scale and on the community level. Forest edges are a focus of both ecological research and nature conservation. With loss and fragmentation of habitats, forest edges are becoming proportionately greater relative to interiors in some areas, with a substantial impact on biodiversity. Moreover, as the increased human activity raises the chance of local extinctions, edges may have increased importance in the recolonization of these habitats. Forest edges have distinctive microclimates; there are abrupt changes in light regimen, substrate, and humidity conditions, and they are generally rich in microhabitats. These factors are highly significant for insects. For this Special Issue, I invite the submission of high quality original research papers and reviews covering all aspects of the relationship between forest edge and insect diversity.
