Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the last several decades, the remarkable advances in surgical and informatics technology in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery have mainly focused on improving preoperative planning, minimally invasive approaches, and reducing operating times. All this is aimed at reducing surgical complications with a rapid return to normality and with the achievement of an excellent result, both aesthetically and functionally. In particular, the importance of both the functional and aesthetic aspects have driven advances in the accuracy of surgical techniques.

In fact, in post-oncological and post-traumatic reconstruction, developments in intraoperative navigation, three-dimensional imaging, stereolithographic models, and implantology can help to improve the accuracy of existing reconstructive methods. Similarly, the introduction of robotic surgery in the treatment of oral cancers has given the maxillofacial surgeon the ability to deal with the most complex cases in a minimally invasive way, mitigating the risks of complications. All this is thanks to the greater precision of robotic surgery compared to traditional surgery and to the fact that it is more conservative in respecting the tissues and organs not affected by pathology, through the limited number of small incisions as well as the greater precision in the reconstructive phases. Tissue engineering and distraction osteogenesis avoid the need for autologous tissue transfer, and can therefore be viewed as more conservative reconstruction methods. Recently, the facial allograft has made it possible to replace entire anatomical facial units, with the possibility of completing sensory recovery and resuscitation in a single procedure.

The purpose of this Special Issue of IJERPH is to collect the greatest number of original articles, case reports, and review articles on recent discoveries in oral and maxillofacial surgery. In particular, we especially encourage young specialists (maxillofacial surgeons, ENT, plastic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neuroradiologists) to submit interdisciplinary work and multi-country collaborative research, as well as narrative and systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2500 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
