Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The rapid pace of urbanization in recent years has brought social, economic, and environmental transformation in rural areas across the world, involving population, industry, land, etc. Rural settlements, where rural residents live and engage in production, are under significant pressure and face significant change as a consequence. The resulting changes and development not merely embody the change in land use morphology, but also the evolution of internal land use structure. Understanding the future evolution of the land use structure of rural settlements is crucial to exploring the rural environmental impacts on rural land use transition; revealing rural function and structure-changing characteristics under the influence of industrialization and urbanization; and, ultimately, promote rural spatial restructuring.

This topic focuses on cutting-edge research that advances the understanding and analysis of the land use structure of rural settlements; sustainable land use patterns of rural settlements; the definition and modelling of land use transition of rural settlements; the formulation, implementation, and contestation of the evolution of rural settlements, and its environmental effects; and human interactions with rural settlements. We also welcome articles from interdisciplinary fields, which are essential for sustainable rural land use, such as how land use within rural settlements is integrated with environmental sustainability. The manuscripts can be case studies, empirical studies, modelling, and review studies from anywhere in the world. The core arguments should focus on the following topics:

  • Economic growth and greener urbanization;

This research aims to evaluate whether agritourism is a sustainable activity, comparing the profiles of accommodation, farmers, and accommodation with agricultural activities. Four specific objectives drive this study: (a) examining the cultural/landscape, economic, environmental, and social indicators of sustainability; (b) comparing indicators of sustainability between groups; (c) revealing whether there is a significant cross-correlation between spatial distribution and its impact on sustainability metrics; (d) discussing the significance of these factors for tourism development policies. The present study uses various techniques to study the degree of equilibrium in the distribution of the accommodation and farms in relation to their sustainable impact. To verify this, we use the global Moran’s I and G (d) tests proposed by Getis and Ord. As well as analyzing local contrasts, LISA (Local Indicators of Spatial Association) and Hot Spot analysis are used for mapping. The main results reveal different profiles of sustainability, highlighting the accommodation profile with the lowest contribution to sustainable development, while profiles where the relationship between agriculture and tourism is most visible seem to perform better. In general, the main results obtained suggest that there is no direct relationship between spatial distribution and sustainability inputs, excluding the potential of endogenous resources, and suggesting the existence of imbalances in the creation of agritourism products. Reasonable resource potential calculation is the basic premise for the country to formulate planning and carry out rural housing land consolidation, which can deepen the research on the economical and intensive use of rural construction land. This paper evaluates farmers’ area demands of rural housing land by using the consumption utility function, analyzes the spatial pattern characteristics of demand and potential, and puts forward suggestions for the resource optimization of rural housing land based on the survey data of 613 farmers and land use data in the Pinggu District of Beijing in 2005 and 2018. Research shows that the utilities of life, production, and the ecological are carried and measured by the corresponding internal land-use structure of rural housing land. The proportion of life land area was the largest, and the life and production land area decreased from plain to mountain, from 119.76 m2 to 89.07 m2 and from 44.87 m2 to 32.85 m2, respectively. The average area potential is 395.64 m2 and the change range is −30.35–1413.75 m2, which is basically in accordance with the normal distribution. The area potential can be divided into five grades, which are expressed by I, II, III, IV, and V in order of potential from small to large by using the natural fracture method. The utility needed should be enhanced and expanded, and the redundant utility should be removed and socialized in the village. The resource optimization and allocation of rural housing land should be promoted according to the idea of regionalization and classification. It provides scientific support for the reform of rural housing land. Full article

Sustainable development of a region requires sustainability of its rural parts, as a source of supplies and resources for the urbanized regions. The current climate changes, loss of biodiversity, limited resources, depopulation, deterioration of economic conditions or even poverty may limit the sustainable development of rural populations. This paper presents the study concerning assessment of sustainable development of rural areas in Poland since 2004, the date of Poland entrance to the European Union, in light of the selected Sustainable Development Indicators. The assessment was based on the set of 38 indicators covering environmental, social and economic pillars of sustainability. The results of this study indicate the significant progress in some aspects of rural development in Poland since 2004. However, several serious limits for rural sustainability were identified, including limited access to basic services including sanitation, anthropopressure on the natural environment, limited access to clear and renewable energy, depopulation, ageing, unfavorable economic conditions and relatively low productivity of agriculture. The rural residential land functions are the comprehensive embodiment of the storage quantity and structural organization of the rural man–land system. Mastering the evolution rule and allocation situation is the basis of effective rural land management and targeted poverty alleviation activities. Based on the theoretical understanding of rural residential multifunction, this paper identifies five functional types and characteristic elements uses a variety of methods to calculate to reveal the spatio-temporal differentiation and allocation and discusses the process mechanism and spatial pattern of function optimization. According to the results, during the sample period, the multifunctional index of rural residential land in China was ranked from large to small as residential function (RF), living function (LF), service function (SF), production function (PF) and ecological function (EF), and the growth rate was ranked from large to small as ecological function (EF), production function (PF), residential function (RF), living function (LF) and service function (SF), and the comprehensive function index increased by more than 50%. The distribution characteristics of all the functional indexes were basically the same. The regional performance was east > central > northeast > west, and the range of each functional index in terms of the interprovincial performance decreased; however, the convergence degree increased, and the number of provinces with comparative advantages in terms of the various functions expanded to more than 50%. The living, ecological, and comprehensive functions increased, while the residential, production, and service functions decreased. The continuous deprivation of the functions and their deprivation in many provinces are problems. This study can provide decision support for promoting the normalization and standardization of superior rural functions. Full article

To promote the coordinated development of urban and rural areas, China has adopted a hybrid strategy of urbanization and rural village renewal. Due to the large development differences between villages, choosing appropriate strategies is significant for rural development. By introducing a new idea to promote urban–rural integration development through a “rural cluster”, this paper explores the comparative advantages of villages in urbanization and renewal, identifies the spatial interaction between villages, and proposes a rural cluster strategy based on the same characteristics and close relationships. Taking Laizhou city, a coastal county in eastern China, as the study area, it provides a new way to deal with village problems at a small scale but of a large number due to difficult development in China. The results indicated that some villages have both high or low rural urbanization suitability (RUS) and village renewal potential (VRP), which makes it difficult to choose development strategies. Compared with the VRP, the spatial interaction of villages in the RUS is closer, but fewer villages participated. The results of village clustering show that the scale of different village clusters and the degree of interaction between villages in Laizhou differ greatly, and village clusters across townships are very common. Since the driving forces of the different scale of rural groups vary, this paper suggests that the development direction and investment focus should be determined according to the scale and characteristics of individual rural groups. Analyzing the relationship between rural settlements and rural population change under different policy scenarios is key in the sustainable development of China’s urban and rural areas. We proposed a framework that comprised the mixed land use structure simulation (MCCA) model and the human–land coupling development model to assess the spatiotemporal dynamic changes in rural settlements and its’ coupling relationship with the rural population in the economically developed region of Deqing, Zhejiang Province. The results showed that rural settlements and urban land increased by 14.36 and 29.07 km2, respectively, over the last 20 years. The expansion of some rural settlements and urban land occurred at the cost of cropland occupation. Rural settlements showed an expansion trend from 2000 to 2020, increasing from 42.69 km2 in 2000 to 57.05 km2 in 2020. In 2035, under the natural development scenario, the cropland protection scenario, and the rural development scenario, rural settlements are projected to show an expansion trend and Wukang and Leidian are the key regions with rural settlement expansion. The distance to Hangzhou, nighttime light data, distance to rivers, and precipitation are important factors influencing the expansion of rural settlements. The coupling relationship between rural settlements and the rural population developed in a coordinated manner from 2000 to 2020. For 2035, under different scenarios, the coupling relationship between rural settlements and the rural population showed different trends. In the rural development scenario, the highest number of towns with coordinated development between rural settlements and the rural population is in Deqing, predominantly with Type I coupling. Overall, an important recommendation from this study is that the sustainable development of regional land use can be promoted by controlling the occupation of cropland for urban and rural construction, balancing rural settlement expansion and rural population growth, and formulating land use policies that are more suitable for rural development. Rural settlements are the carrier of farmers’ life and rural industries. This paper introduces symbiosis theory to construct an analytical framework for the symbiosis between production land and living land in rural settlements, taking three villages in Shanxi, China as examples (secondary industry-led: Tian Village, tourism-led: Shuiyukou Village, multi-industry integration: Jiling Village). The results show that: (1) From 2010 to 2020, the compatibility and coupling coordination degree between production land and living land in Tian Village increased; the compatibility degree between production land and living land in Shuiyukou Village decreased slightly, and the coupling coordination increased significantly. In Jiling Village, the compatibility between production land and living land decreased, and the coupling coordination showed an increasing trend. (2) From 2010 to 2020, the degree of symbiosis between production land and living land in the three Villages both showed an increasing trend, and the growth of symbiosis degree was mainly caused by the growth of coupling coordination. (3) In 2010–2015 and 2015–2020, the symbiotic growth between production land and living land in Tian Village was driven by farmers’ demand and social economy, respectively. The dominant driving factor for Shuiyukou Village in these two periods was resource endowment. Jiling Village was driven by social economy and regional policies, respectively. This work can provide scientific support for the practical adjustment of land use structure and the reconstruction of rural settlements in China. Full article

Taking the supplement of the quantity and quality of cultivated land in rural settlements as the departure point, this paper discusses the spatial and temporal integration reconstruction method of rural settlements. The disorderly expansion of residential areas in Pinggu District, Beijing, China has led to the erosion of high-quality cultivated land in the region and the advantages of mountain resources have not been fully utilized in this area. Therefore, Pinggu District was selected as the research area. Using the spatial analysis function in GIS, this paper uses the comprehensive correction method of the per capita construction land standard and the neighborhood substitution method to analyze the quantitative potential of rural settlements to supplement cultivated land and the qualitative grade of cultivated land after arrangement. A combination of exclusion matrices are employed to identify the spatial and temporal arrangements of rural settlements. The research shows that the effective cultivated land area of rural settlements in Pinggu District is 514.24 ha, and the coefficient of increasing cultivated land is 9.25%. Rural residential areas in the district are divided into priority sorting area, key sorting area, moderate sorting area, and restricted sorting area; they account for 18.13%, 21.10%, 20.85%, and 39.93% of the total area, respectively. According to the regional characteristics and dominant factor of the different consolidation areas, corresponding consolidation goals, models, and engineering measures are proposed to enrich the theory and approach to village planning and to provide a reference for practitioners engaged in regional rural land consolidation. The innovation of this study is putting forward the consolidation objectives, models and engineering measures based on the regional characteristics and leading factors of different land consolidation areas. This study has reference significance for the formulation and implementation of regional rural settlements consolidation planning and the policy of increasing and decreasing urban and rural construction land. In order to break away from the overreliance on a single industry and the simple supply of agricultural products, rural multifunctional research has gradually received public attention. To a certain extent, multifunctional classification governance paths can enhance rural competitiveness and land use efficiency and alleviate the problems of local poverty and unbalanced development in rural regions. Based on the theory of rural multifunctionality, this paper reveals the spatial characteristics and coordination of rural multifunctionality at the township scale, analyzes the barrier functions of different regions, and clarifies the direction of rural development using the rural assessment method, the trade-off synergy model, and the dysfunctional diagnostic model, taking Yongchang County in the western corridor of China as an example. On this basis, we further discuss the path selection of rural governance in northwest China. The results show that: (1) The spatial distribution of rural functions has pronounced heterogeneity, with better life security functions and ecological background functions, and similar spatial patterns; economic development functions are on the low side, showing the divergent characteristics of enhancement from the township center to the surrounding area. The functions of agricultural production are low, and the spatial distribution is similar to that for the living guarantee function. (2) The living guarantee function has a strong trade-off effect on the ecological background function, and the living guarantee and ecological background functions have a synergistic effect on the agricultural development function. (3) We classified types of villages according to the intensity index of village function trade-offs and clarified the functional development characteristics of each administrative village. The incompatibility of village functions caused by different demands is the root hinderance to the development of villages. Full article

Rural residential area is the core component of rural land, and the process of its transfer exists to guide the change of rural land use. Its evolution is closely related to population migration, so exploring the spatial and temporal evolution of the coupling type of human-land relationship and its driving mechanism is the core scientific basis for the optimal allocation of rural land resources. From the perspective of human-land relationship, this paper introduces spatio-temporal big data on the basis of 3S technology and constructs an elasticity coefficient model. The composite index method is also used to further explore the coupling types of rural human-land relations in the Luoyang region. At the same time, spatial autocorrelation and spatial autoregressive models were used to reveal the driving mechanism of the spatio-temporal evolution of rural human-land relationship types in the Luoyang region. The results showed that: (1) Against the background of the continuous reduction of the rural population in Luoyang, the scale of rural residential area first increases and then decreases, and spatially they continue to gather around the central city (2) At the township scale, the conflict between people and land tends to be moderated. The elasticity coefficient shows a zonal distribution pattern in the southwest of Luoyang region and the townships around the central city. (3) There is a non-negligible spatial correlation between rural human-land relations in Luoyang region. The initial scale of rural residentials, arable land area, rural resident population and industrial output value are positively correlated with the coordination of people-land relationship, and the slope, elevation and distance from the central city have an inverse effect on the harmony of the relationship between people and land. With rural revitalization being established as the national policy in China, the environmental quality and residential comfort of rural settlements has received widespread attention from the whole society in China. However, due to the over-exploitation of resources and the uneven development between urban and rural in China, the environmental conditions and residential experience in rural settlements in China are still relatively backward. To prompt the environmental quality and residential comfort of rural settlements in China, it is necessary to optimize the planning and design of rural settlements in China. As a multi-function method, Building Information Modeling (BIM) can significantly contribute to the planning and design of rural settlements in China. To optimize the environmental quality and residential experience in rural settlements in China, this study is developed to perform a systematic literature review of the BIM capabilities in the design and planning phase of rural settlements in China. To achieve this aim, the PRISMA protocol was used to perform this systematic review. The review and discussion of this study were conducted between June 2022 and September 2022. In this study, Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus were adopted as the main databases, and 189 articles were reviewed. Through this systematic review, it can be identified that BIM capabilities have significant advantages in the following aspects of the design and planning of rural settlements in China: Data storage and management; 3D modeling and visualization; Disaster prevention and environmental analysis; Cost estimation and optimization. Furthermore, through the discussion and analysis of research results, it can be concluded that BIM capabilities can perform their benefits in the rural settlements’ design and planning through their following characteristics: knowledge management, simulation, and modeling. Based on the research results, it can be identified that knowledge management capabilities in BIM can effectively provide information support and knowledge assistance throughout the design and planning phase of rural settlements in China. BIM’s simulation and modeling capabilities can simulate and demonstrate the rural environment and their internal structures in rural settlements’ design and planning phase to achieve their environmental optimization, residential comfort improvement, clash detection, disaster prevention, and expenditure reduction. Moreover, the challenge and future directions of BIM capabilities in the design and planning phase of rural settlements in China are discussed and analyzed. This study can effectively promote and optimize the BIM utilization in the design and planning phase of rural settlements in China, to better enhance their environmental quality and residential experience.
