Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Today, the business world is exceptionally concentrated on the logistics system, and a large number of companies are attempting to maintain the worldwide market and accomplish the best possible position of greatest generation and efficient sourcing. Accordingly, logistics management (LM) is an effective system for these organizations to deliver their products to the customers at the right time and at optimal cost. LM includes the planning, implementation, and control of the flow of raw materials and final products from suppliers to customers.

Logistics is regarded as the set of techniques and equipment required to organize a company or service which focuses on the quantity of products, geo-location, and stipulated time. Within logistics, different objectives are tackled mainly according to economic, environmental, and social aspects. By fulfilling the optimal levels of objectives, companies reach sustainable development. Although there are some tangible advantages for the logistics sector (e.g., cost reduction, transportation, and express delivery and information technology), its challenging disadvantages should not be neglected. The most important disadvantages are coordination, cost of transport, legality, and multinationals and large companies. On the other hand, advances in information technology (IT) have made the virtual world more effective in recent years. The Internet of Things (IoT) is progressing day by day, and its role in our lives is becoming more pronounced. Object intelligence in IoT is accomplished using devices such as radio frequency identification (RFID), global positioning systems (GPS), and other sensor equipment in networks connected to the Internet.

Operations research (OR) and other relevant topics have been considered by researchers as regards their applicability to LM. One of the most useful applications of OR is logistics modeling in terms of different optimization problems, such as the vehicle routing problem (VRP) and arc routing problem (ARP). This Special Issue seeks to contribute to the development of models and solution algorithms in logistics routing problems. Authors are cordially invited to submit original research papers, review articles, empirical studies, and case studies (for teaching and training) for the Special Issue to Logistics until 31 December 2021. Manuscripts or papers can be submitted on the following topics:

  • Extended models of VRPs and ARPs;
  • Applications of exact solutions and meta-heuristic algorithms in logistics;
  • Uncertainty control in logistics system;
  • Sustainable development of logistics system;
  • Applications of multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) approaches in logistics;
  • Applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the logistics system;
  • Enhancement of LM during pandemics;
  • Case studies in the field of logistics.

This list is not exhaustive. Other articles in the field of logistics are highly welcome. We look forward to your submissions.

Background: The purpose of this paper is to develop a generic transport system for same-day delivery that is suitable for matching long-distance bulk distribution with local distribution. Methods: The innovative concepts of this research entail the introduction of mobile hub (MH) networks in combination with long combination vehicles (LCVs). LCVs are trucks with an additional loading capacity of 50% compared to standard trucks. Mobile hubs allow switching trailers at any suitable location at any time. They increase flexibility and yield savings in time and costs. On top of that, they reduce the number of driver hours needed. In our LCV-MH concept, standard trucks are initially—at their home base—combined to LCVs, which drive a considerable distance, but are eventually, at a mobile hub in the vicinity of the customers, broken down again into standard trucks heading for the customers. Results: We illustrate the practical relevance of our ideas by a case study based upon actual and accurate data from practice. Here, we compare the LCV-MH concept with the strategy of using only LCVs. Conclusions: Next to yielding considerable cost savings, the LCV-MH concept makes it easier to generate routes that comply with the EU transport rules. Full article

Background: Dual-level stochastic programming is a technique that allows modelling uncertainty at two different levels, even when the time granularity differs vastly between the levels. In this paper we study the problem of determining the optimal fleet size and mix of vessels performing maintenance operations at offshore wind farms. In this problem the strategic planning spans decades, while operational planning is performed on a day-to-day basis. Since the operational planning level must somehow be taken into account when making strategic plans, and since uncertainty is present at both levels, dual-level stochastic programming is suitable. Methods: We present a heuristic solution method for the problem based on the greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP). To evaluate the operational costs of a given fleet, a novel fleet deployment heuristic (FDH) is embedded into the GRASP. Results: Computational experiments show that the FDH produces near optimal solutions to the operational day-to-day fleet deployment problem. Comparing the GRASP to exact methods, it produces near optimal solutions for small instances, while significantly improving the primal solutions for larger instances, where the exact methods do not converge. Conclusions: The proposed heuristic is suitable for solving realistic instances, and produces near optimal solution in less than 2 h. Full article

In the recent era, the rapidly increasing trend of e-commerce business creates opportunities for logistics service providers to grow globally. With this growth, the concern regarding the implementation of sustainability in logistic networks has received attention in recent years. Thus, in this work, we have focused on the vehicle routing problem (VRP) to deliver the products in a lesser time horizon with driver safety concern considerations in business (B2B) e-commerce platforms. We proposed a sustainable logistics network that captures the complexities of suppliers, retailers, and logistics service providers. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) approach is applied to formulate a model to minimize total time associated with order processing, handling, packaging, shipping, and vehicle maintenance. Branch-and-bound algorithms in the LINGO optimization tool and genetic algorithm (GA) are used to solve the formulated mathematical model. The computational experiments are performed in eight different case scenarios (small-sized problem to large-sized problem) to validate the model. Full article
