Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The biomaterials based on hydroxyapatite composite are currently in the attention of researchers due to their unique properties that make them suitable for various applications in the biomedical field. Areas such as tissue engineering, cancer, infection, drug delivery systems, and depollution are areas that could benefit fully from the progress of research on hydroxyapatite composite. The patient’s quality of life could be enhanced by using new hydroxyapatite composites as bone fillers, loading agent, antimicrobial agent, coating of implants, etc.

This Special Issue will focus on novel advances and applications of hydroxyapatite composites. The main objective is to highlight the recent progress in development, fabrication and characterization of hydroxyapatite composites with potential application in biomedical and environmental fields (infection treatment and prevention, implants, tissue engineering, drug delivery, coatings, cancer research, water and soil depollution and other relevant applications). Special attention will be paid in this Special Issue to the physico-chemical (including surface and colloidal properties) and biological properties (including antimicrobial ones) of new hydroxyapatite composites and their potential applications in the biomedical and environmental fields.

Research and long review papers containing new findings and perspectives on the field of hydroxyapatite composite (development, fabrication and characterization) and their recently applications are welcomed for this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

The effect of nanosilica on the microstructure setting process of tetracalcium phosphate/nanomonetite calcium phosphate cement mixture (CPC) with the addition of 5 wt% of magnesium pyrophosphate (assigned as CT5MP) and osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells cultured in cement extracts were studied. A more compact microstructure was observed in CT5MP cement with 0.5 wt% addition of nanosilica (CT5MP1Si) due to the synergistic effect of Mg2P2O7 particles, which strengthened the cement matrix and nanosilica, which supported gradual growth and recrystallization of HAP particles to form compact agglomerates. The addition of 0.5 wt% of nanosilica to CT5MP cement caused an increase in CS from 18 to 24 MPa while the setting time increased almost twofold. It was verified that adding nanosilica to CPC cement, even in a low amount (0.5 and 1 wt% of nanosilica), positively affected the injectability of cement pastes and differentiation of cells with upregulation of osteogenic markers in cells cultured in cement extracts. Results revealed appropriate properties of these types of cement for filling bone defects. Full article

Wastewater treatment remains a critical issue globally, despite various technological advancements and breakthroughs. The study of different materials and technologies gained new valences in the last years, in order to obtain cheap and efficient processes, to obtain a cleaner environment for future generations. In this context, the present review paper presents the new achievements in the materials domain with highlights on apatitic materials used for decontamination of water loaded with heavy metals. The main goal of this review is to present the adsorptive removal of heavy metals using hydroxyapatite-based adsorbents, offering a general overview regarding the recent progress in this particular area. Developing the current review, an attempt has been made to give appropriate recognition to the most recent data regarding the synthesis methods and targeted pollutants, including important information regarding the synthesis methods and precursors, morphological characteristics of the adsorbent materials and effectiveness of processes.
