Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue will publish papers by authors who presented at the ICEUBI2019—International Congress on Engineering—Engineering for Evolution held by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Beira Interior, located in Covilhã, Portugal, on November 27–29, 2019. The event aims to promote the contribution and concerns of engineering with regard to human society and create a preview of our collective future, ensuring contact between researchers and practitioners from different fields of engineering, and permit the dissemination of research, innovation, and development within the various sectors of economic activity. A set of articles were published in a Special Issue of the Open Engineering Journal, Millenium Journal, and in the Case Studies on Transport Problems Journal (ELSEVIER). In this edition, we want to reinforce the internationalization of the event and raise its standard of quality by considering this Special Issue, following materials topics on:

  • Aeronautics and astronautics: materials and structures, aircraft, and spacecraft engineering;
  • Architecture: construction, urban planning studies, projects, and plans;
  • Informatics: computer architecture, human interaction with the computer, computer graphics and visual, and smart systems;
  • Textile science and technology: fashion design, biotechnology, technological materials and nonconventional or high technology materials, and advanced materials and processing;
  • Civil engineering: structures and materials, geotechnics, transportation, sustainability and green structures, bridges, dams and special structures, foundations and modeling of the land, building materials, and rehabilitation of buildings;
  • Electrotechnical and mechanical engineering: industrial design, bioengineering, electrotechnology, CAD/CAM, prototyping and product design, mechanics of materials, and mechanical systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Materials is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

More than 226 million people are affected by some type of disaster every year in various dimensions of human life, both in the short and long term. In this context, housing provision plays a leading role when it comes to basic needs and the choice of construction technologies and materials are determinant for a well-succeeded housing provision process. This work aims to analyze the viability of reinforced masonry technology with cement-stabilized compressed earth blocks as an alternative for the (re)construction process in situations that involve disaster risk reduction (DRR). To address this issue, a discussion from the literature and the main results obtained during the investigations carried out within the scope of the Simple Housing Solution (SHS) Project are presented. In the sequence, analyses are performed under United Nations Development Program/International Recovery Platform sustainability recommendations: environmental, technical, financial and socio-organizational aspects. It is concluded that the technology of Compressed Earth Blocks (CEBs) reinforced structural masonry has a high potential to be successfully applied in DRR situations, especially when associated with the community construction system in a joint effort.
