Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the exponential growth of data traffic and the increasing complexity of network architectures, AI techniques offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance the performance, efficiency and reliability of optical communication systems. This Special Issue explores cutting-edge research and innovative applications of AI algorithms, bio-inspired optimization algorithms, machine learning models and deep neural networks in areas such as optical network design, routing and resource allocation, modulation formats, signal processing and network management. It aims to cover a comprehensive view of how AI can revolutionize optical communications and propel the future of ultra-fast and high-capacity networks.

This Special Issue welcomes contributions on a wide range of topics related to the application of artificial intelligence for optimizing optical communications and networking. Some potential topics for submissions include (but are not limited to):

  1. AI-based and bio-inspired optimization algorithms for optical network design and planning.
  2. Machine learning techniques for dynamic resource allocation and routing in optical networks.
  3. Deep learning models for advanced modulation formats and signal processing in optical communications.
  4. Reinforcement learning approaches for adaptive and autonomous optical network management.
  5. AI-driven techniques for fault detection, localization and self-healing in optical networks.
  6. Cognitive routing and spectrum management using AI methods in optical wireless communication systems.
  7. AI-enabled predictive maintenance and quality of service optimization in optical networks.
  8. AI-assisted energy-efficient design and operation of optical communication infrastructure.
  9. Integration of AI with software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV) in optical networks.
  10. Performance evaluation and benchmarking of AI-based solutions in optical communications.
  11. Case studies and practical implementations showcasing the benefits and challenges of AI in optical networks.
  12. Future trends and emerging applications of AI for optimizing optical communications and networking.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Mathematics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
