Untargeted Metabolomics and Bacterial Metabolism

Dear Colleagues,

The bacteria found in the intestinal tract, in the soil, or in food are capable of metabolizing the substrates they find in the matrix, converting them into new ones that can be biologically active or related to new biological processes, pathologies, etc. The identification of these new microbial metabolites is a difficult challenge that could be aided by the use of untargeted metabolomics, a very promising tool. Untargeted metabolomics generates a large amount of new data. Thousands of ions are normally found in untargeted metabolomics studies, but very few are finally validated and correlated with the biological system under study. Fortunately, more and more untargeted metabolomics studies are achieving novel and ground-breaking results, opening new research lines. Therefore, this Special Issue aims to collect relevant studies focused on describing the new metabolites produced by bacteria metabolism using untargeted metabolomics.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
