Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Environmental omics represents a cutting-edge approach for studying the intricate molecular makeup of ecosystems. It leverages high-throughput technologies to analyze the collective genetic, proteomic, metabolomic, and other molecular components within environmental samples. This holistic approach aims to unravel the complexities of ecological systems and understand how organisms interact with their surroundings. Mass spectrometry (MS) has become an indispensable tool in the field of environmental omics, enabling researchers to characterize and quantify a wide range of molecules present in environmental samples. In recent years, the use of target and nontarget strategies have increased the possibilities to identify hundreds of metabolites, lipids, proteins, etc., in aquatic organisms. Thus, target analysis focuses on the identification and quantification of specific compounds of interest that are pre-selected based on known properties, such as environmental contaminants, biomarkers, or metabolites. On the other hand, nontarget analysis involves the comprehensive screening and identification of all detectable compounds present in a sample, without prior knowledge of their identity or abundance. By combining both target and nontarget analysis approaches, researchers can gain a holistic understanding of the chemical composition and dynamics of environmental systems, facilitating effective environmental monitoring, risk assessment, and management strategies. All researchers working in these emerging and promising fields of research are strongly encouraged to submit their original studies for publication in this Special Issue of Molecules.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
