Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

World hunger increased in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was estimated 768 million people undernourished worldwide, which is 118 million more people facing hunger in 2020 than in 2019. The prevalence of undernourishment increased from 8.4% to 9.9% from 2019 to 2020. The UNSDG goal of achieving the Zero Hunger in 2030 requires innovative agriculture to produce more food. Climate change, which increases the climate variability and extremes, impact agriculture significantly. For example, increases in the frequency and severity of floods and droughts due to climate change have caused more loss on crop yield. Climate-smart agriculture is an integrated and transformational approach emerged mainly in response to two grand challenges – food security and climate change. It aims at sustaining or increasing agricultural productivity while enhancing agriculture’s resilience to climate change and reducing environment footprint and greenhouse gas emissions of agriculture. Remote sensing is one of the core technologies that enable the climate-smart agriculture. Remote sensing provides in-time information for decision and validation in all stages of the climate-smart agriculture practices. The advancement of remote sensing technologies allows data collection and information production timely to meet the decision requirements at many scales.

This special issue calls for original manuscripts that describe the innovative studies of developing remote-sensing algorithms and their applications to advance monitoring climate-smart agriculture system, development of agriculture modeling methodology, automation technology, decision making/support system, or use case. Remote sensing technology should have a crucial role.

Example topics include:

  • Climate-smart decision making
  • Remote-sensing-supported Agro-AI/ML
  • In-season crop mapping using remote sensing technologies
  • Remote-sensing-enhanced agricultural climate modeling
  • Crop evapotranspiration modeling with remote sensing
  • Crop condition monitoring using remote sensing technologies
  • Remote-sensing-based crop condition assessment and growth stage estimation
  • Irrigation decision support systems with integrated use of remote sensing data
  • Assimilation of remote sensed observations in crop modeling
  • Crop yield estimation using remote sensing
  • Precision agriculture
  • Remote-sensing-based risk management
  • Remote-sensing-based sustainable agricultural systems and decision practices.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Remote Sensing is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
