Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Waste management is a pressing global challenge that needs innovative and sustainable approaches to minimize the environmental and social impact. The solutions to waste management problems need collaboration and scientific enhancement from various fields, including environmental, engineering, policy, economics, and social science. Over time, rapid progress in the scientific and practical field of sustainable waste management has been conducted, including adopting waste prevention, reuse, recycling, energy recovery, and disposal. Technology advancement in waste-to-energy systems, waste separation, and innovative recycling techniques have been shown in the current literature. However, many challenges in the implementation are still needed, especially to handle the management of electronic waste (e-waste), plastic waste, and waste management practices in developing economic regions.

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest advances and prospects in sustainable waste management. This Special Issue will disseminate high-quality research and stimulate interdisciplinary discussions. In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  1. Recent developments on waste reduction, recycling, and resource recovery methods.
  2. Innovative technologies and strategies on treatment and recycling practices, including ICT (information and communication technologies).
  3. Challenges and opportunities for sustainable waste management in developing economic regions.
  4. Policy and regulatory measures towards sustainable waste management.
  5. Environmental and health risks assessment related to waste management.
  6. Incorporating and integrating circular economy concepts in the waste management process,
  7. Identification and analysis of awareness-raising activities to promote sustainability in waste management practices.

We would like to offer Sustainability’s readers intriguing experiences, primarily to provide the latest advancement and prospects in sustainable waste management. Case studies that reported sufficient, reliable, and accurate investigation in a particular region are very welcome for this Special Issue. We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
