Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Proper energy management is essential for increasing energy efficiency and reducing energy waste, and for pursuing the goal of net zero energy buildings. As is the case for many countries, the building sector accounts for about 40% of total energy consumption, and thus is one of the most energy-intensive sectors. Hence, analysis and studies on a proper energy management of building services and components are essential to find solutions and methodologies, scalable and applicable in different contexts.

Based on these considerations, this Special Issue aims to collect applications, simulations, and analyses of energy management in building services and components capable of contributing to the objective of net zero energy buildings. The purpose is to gather and share the most widespread solutions and to identify innovative and promising applications for improving the energy management of buildings with the aims of energy efficiency and savings.

Therefore, studies on innovative solutions (the use of innovative materials and plant systems, storage systems, BACS for new buildings and the retrofitting of existing buildings) and applications of energy management components (studied with dynamic simulations, new calculation methods and/or monitoring campaigns) are welcome in this Special Issue, entitled ‘Energy Management in Building Services and Components to reach Net Zero Energy Buildings’. We encourage colleagues to submit research papers, short communications, and reviews on the following topics, such as include (but are not limited to):

  • Energy and environmental impact analysis of innovative management applications and high-energy-performance buildings;
  • Energy and thermal properties measurement and analysis of innovative materials capable of significantly contributing to the net zero energy buildings objective;
  • Renewable energy sources and storage systems applications, HVAC monitoring and analysis, and BACS system applications;
  • Simulations for enhancing Net ZEB management using different approaches (BIM, artificial neural network, CFD, and so on);
  • Buildings retrofitting and indoor environmental quality investigation.
  • We also welcome extended abstracts in advance for any inquiries about relevant and covered topics.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
