Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We believe that everybody agrees that the construction sector is the most resource intensive industrial sector across the world. This sector has been identified as having the greatest potential for circular economy value creation. The constructor sector in the EU accounts for around 50% of the entire primary raw materials. Urbanisation, population growth and industrialisation at unprecedented scale, as well as climate change, have resulted in significant impact on infrastructure development. Construction materials, as the basis of any building and infrastructure projects, are subject to heavy demand to satisfy need. The construction materials industry has become a major user of global resources, thus exhausting natural resources, degrading the environment and generating high costs to business operators.

In recent years, enormous progress has been made towards achieving sustainability in the constructor sector through the development and application of sustainable construction materials and technologies. However, the scope and opportunities for further improvements are still significant. The current research and practice in sustainable construction materials also show that more research and implementation activities remain to be done in this area.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to disseminate and exchange information about the latest research and development in sustainable construction materials and technologies with an emphasis on new constituent materials, testing, durability and sustainability. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Low clinker cements;
  • Alternative binders;
  • Novel supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs);
  • Low carbon cement-based materials;
  • Recycled and secondary aggregates;
  • Construction products with recycled materials;
  • Developments in materials manufacturing and processing;
  • 3D printing of construction materials;
  • Smart and sustainable resources management;
  • Life cycle analysis;
  • Demonstration projects with sustainable construction materials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
