Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Car dependency for commuting trips is still a major issue in many parts of the world. Commuting represents a high proportion of daily trips in urban areas, while most vehicles continue to use conventional internal combustion engines. The extensive use of cars for commuting can have negative consequences for transportation systems' performance, the environment, and well-being. Increased congestion and travel times, degradation of infrastructure quality, and higher levels of air pollution due to gaseous emissions are just some of the problems caused. Moreover, higher levels of car reliance may lead to a less active lifestyle, which can have negative impacts on physical and mental health.

Some of the factors that drive preference towards car use for commuting are convenience, lack of alternatives, or a lack of environmental awareness. However, further actions must be taken to reduce the negative consequences of extensive car use. The aim of this Special Issue is to enhance the existing knowledge with the most recent advancements in policies, strategies, and interventions to promote the use of sustainable modes of transport. It is expected that the papers selected for this Special Issue will contribute to identifying approaches for achieving modal shift from cars to more sustainable modes of transport and evaluating their impact on transforming urban areas into greener and more environmentally friendly spaces.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to):

  • Mode choice analysis to further understand the drivers behind the choice of driving and the potential for change.
  • Case studies on policies and strategies regarding sustainable commuting modal shift in urban areas.
  • The use of new technologies in promoting sustainable alternatives and raising environmental awareness.
  • Development of shared mobility and micro-mobility systems as alternative means of transport for commuting trips in urban areas.
  • Benefits and incentives for increasing the use of public transport and other sustainable modes of transport.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
