Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Humans generate several tons of waste every day, and concurrently, there is a growing concern over the impact of such waste on the environment and human health. Poor waste management systems on any scale can create environmental problems, health problems, and even economic concerns. However, this waste is also rich in water, nutrients, energy content, and materials that can be retrieved for various usages if managed properly. Therefore, to create a sustainable society with a healthy environment without depleting limited resources, we need to create a “circular economy” in which we sustainably utilize resources. In this regard, recycling and reuse of waste play a vital role in conserving resources and achieving sustainable development. Utilizing resources sustainably has several advantages: 1) reducing pollution, 2) saving energy and mineral resources, 3) saving money, 4) reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and 5) reducing the amount of waste.

This Special Issue focuses on resource recycling and reuse from municipal waste, wastewater, construction, and demolition waste. This Special Issue aims to gather contributions addressing the concerns of resource recycling and using recycled materials and their in-use performance and effect on human health. Papers discussing practices, modeling, health and safety issues which include identification of hazards, exposure assessments with a possible route of transmission, risk characterization, management, and communication are very much welcomed.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
