Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue will be focused on the sustainable management of coastal waters and Mediterranean wetlands. It is well known that these ecosystems are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world. During the last century, coastal waters and Mediterranean wetlands have been widely affected by anthropogenic activities. These human activities have caused the disappearance of almost 50% of Mediterranean wetlands in the last 50 years (mainly due to agriculture activities), while fishery, urban growth, and probably the upcoming blue industry have been and will be responsible for significant impacts on coastal areas.

Global warming, eutrophication, and wastewater treatment are among the main concerns of Mediterranean wetlands and transitional and coastal waters. Sustainable management requires knowledge about long-term trends, time–space variability, and local impacts. This can be achieved through combined remote sensing and field surveys. Additionally, socioeconomic aspects in the drainage basin and/or along the coast must also be taken into account. Ecosystem services are important to human wellbeing, so identifying and assessing these services, as well as the ecosystem resilience to human pressures and global change, is an important issue for sustainable management.

In this framework, the Special Issue welcomes original research and review papers focused on the latest knowledge and innovations in sustainable wetland, transition, and coastal water management. Contribution of field and remote sensing studies, model-based approaches as well as any combination thereof are welcome. Papers must show originality and address new knowledge related to the scopes of the Special Issue and aims to fill the gap of transdisciplinary studies considering drainage basin–wetland and/or land–sea interactions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
