Toward a Next-Generation Biomonitoring of Ecological Systems in the Framework of Sustainability

Dear Colleagues,

The sustainable development of human societies has its foundations on the mindful use of natural resources and the preservation of ecological equilibria. The pragmatic framework to achieve these goals implies an adaptive ecosystem management, a strategy allowing recursively improving policies and actions in the light of their outcomes. Environmental monitoring, and biomonitoring in particular, is pivotal in this process by providing the feedbacks driving the adaptive process. The questions, approaches, and methodologies that had dominated the field of biomonitoring for decades are currently facing a rapid transition toward next-generation biomonitoring, bringing new, exciting challenges to address. Key topics involve embracing a broader spectrum of biological and ecological complexities, the choice of larger spatial and temporal scales, the use of novel data analysis techniques, and enhancing the integration of biomonitoring with decision-making processes.

This Special Issue aims at becoming a comprehensive platform for sharing exciting new advancements in biomonitoring as well as more traditional studies, all focused on sustaining and promoting the sustainability of human policies, management, and practices. Relevant articles from all areas of biomonitoring, from all environmental compartments all over the world, employing every kind of technique and focusing on all the levels of ecological organization, from organisms to ecosystems, are welcome, as are the articles focusing on the integration of biomonitoring within the adaptive ecosystem management, on raising the awareness of citizens through biomonitoring studies, or on enhancing synergy among different research.
