Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In 2014, the United Nations said that a proportion of the world’s population living in urban areas is expected to increase to 66 percent by 2050, which poses significant challenges related to environmental, economic, and social sustainability. As the leading paradigm of urbanism today, cities are undergoing a digital transformation, turning into smart cities. A more sustainable and efficient environment for their residents is being emphasized as the most important arena for smart transitions in an increasingly urbanized world. 

Now, city governments face significant challenges due to the issues engendered by urban growth, such as increased energy consumption, pollution, toxic waste disposal, resource depletion, inefficient management of urban infrastructures, ineffective planning processes and decision-making systems, saturated transport networks, endemic congestion, and social inequality and socio-economic disparity.  

This Special Issue focuses on more innovative solutions and sophisticated approaches for smart cities, underpinned by cutting-edge technologies and groundbreaking scientific knowledge. It helps to monitor, understand, analyze, and plan cities with respect to sustainability, efficiency, resilience, equity, and quality of life. The topics of interests include but are not limited to:

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
