Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Rural domestic sewage comprises black water from toilets and gray water from bathrooms and kitchens. With the increasing demand for a high-quality rural living environment, more attention has been directed towards the treatment of rural black and gray water. The treatment and resource utilization of rural black and gray water hold great significance for improving the rural living environment. However, treating rural black and gray water differs from the treatment of urban domestic sewage. Treatment technology, modes, operations, and maintenance still present numerous challenges. The rural characteristics of each country vary, leading to differences in treatment technology and requirements for rural black and gray water. In many rural areas of underdeveloped countries, wastewater treatment relies on intuition, with fundamental technical guidance and suggestions for sewage lacking. This not only causes pollution in other receiving environments but also results in the waste of reused resources.

This Special Issue welcomes the submission of original research and review articles on new technologies, resource utilization models, and protection mechanisms for rural black and gray wastewater treatment worldwide or regionally. These articles aim to improve the living standards of rural residents, meet the requirements of sustainable development in rural areas, and realize the resource utilization of pollutants, offering high scientific research and application reference value. Related topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Rural black and gray water pollution reduction and carbon reduction treatment technology.
  • Microbial-enhanced treatment of rural black and gray water.
  • Rural black and gray wastewater biology–ecological combined treatment technology.
  • Removing pollutants in rural black and gray water.
  • Rural black and gray water recycling utilization and environmental risk assessment.
