Digital Drill Core Models: Structure-from-Motion as a Tool for the Characterisation, Orientation, and Digital Archiving of Drill Core Samples
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This paper presents a SfM workflow to generate digital drill core models for a comprehensive visual record of surface conditions.
Pros.
All the details of the setups/experiments were provided, so it seems to be a good reference for researchers in similar areas. Not only apply a 3D scanner based on SfM, but they also provided a novel volume estimation/experiment with 3D printer.
Cons.
Lack of academic/technical contribution. It would be better if there were some technical contributions to this application (SfM/3D imaging on drill core samples).

Reviewer 2 Report
The authors discuss the use of the SfM photogrammetry in order to generate 25 digital drill core models of drill cores.
The manuscript is clear and well organized. However, the manuscript looks more like a technical note than a research article. Therefore, I suggest transforming the paper from "article" into "technical note".
Some issues within the paper:
I suggest to remove the Table 1, becuase is too simplistic and does not add quality to the paper.
Lastly, I suggest to check the values reported in table 2 and in particular the id called "DH4-568a" and "DH4-568b" because show an high RMSE error (see field "Marker set Mean control point error").
Please remove the paper n.28 from the references since that this record cannot be found or it is necessary to clear this issue.

Reviewer 3 Report
The paper entitled "Structure-from-Motion as a tool for the characterisation, orientation, and digital archiving of drill core samples" deals with the reconstruction of drill samples via a SfM workflow conceived by the authors, involving also the 3D printing of samples.
I recommend to place figures in the appropriate position in the text (e.g., Figure 1 is at page 3 and it i referenced at page 8).
Please remove the gray background from Figure 3.
