Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Managing source–sink relationships is important to ensure yield and fruit specifications are sustained. Fruit production systems have changed and intensified; we now have smaller trees that require fewer inputs and are more easily suited to mechanised practices. Similarly, vineyards are managed to balance seasonal vegetative growth, contributing to the grape quality. Using cultivars and rootstocks is crucial for advanced orchard and vineyard systems to sustain and enhance fruit production. Climate change and variability influence these systems by changing source–sink relationships and, consequently, fruit quality.

Research enhancing our understanding and management of source–sink relationships in advanced viticulture and horticulture production systems is very welcome. This includes studies on tree and vine balance, seasonal carbohydrate and nutrient dynamics, as well as the allocation and translocation of these to the roots, canopy, and fruit development. Using technology to monitor these developments facilitates informed decision making for managing trees and vines.

Cultivar and rootstock selection are important contributions to optimise source–sink relationships, but both can be substantially affected by environmental conditions. Therefore, the challenges of climate change in this context will be strongly considered for this issue.
