Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Internet of Things (IoT) technology is an important infrastructure for information transmission in smart living, smart health, smart cities and homes. It can effectively improve the quality of life of citizens and bring great convenience to our lives, by bringing together industries, academia, researchers, experts and students. Based on IoT paradigm, smart living and health have become large systems that integrate organically, covering a more thorough perception, more comprehensive interconnection, and deeper intelligence. Among them, the Internet of Things is a very important element in the smart living and smart city, which support the whole intelligent systems. In addition, IoT provides a solid technical foundation and perception ability for the smart city and smart publuc health, making the perception more in-depth and intelligent. Only through environmental perception, water level perception, lighting perception, urban pipe network perception, mobile payment perception, personal health perception, wireless city portal perception, intelligent transportation interactive perception, smart healthcare systems and so on, can the smart living realize intelligent management in municipal administration, people's livelihood, industry, healthcare and other aspects. One of the main goals of the Internet of Things is to realize smart life, healthcare, cities and homes, and many industries applications based on the Internet of Things are serving the mainstream applications of smart life.

However, this paradigm poses unprecedented challenges for connecting networks technologies, enabling the collection, exchange, and analysis of generated information, and making smart the contextaware adaptation pervasive frameworks, platfoms and systems. In addition, IoT requirements need to design new fexible and open architectures to deal with following issues :

  • Building interoperable IoT solutions
  • End-to-End solutions (Frameworks, Platfoms and systems) rely on standards
  • Adoption of open standards that encourage both by IoT developers and the IoT industry at large
  • IoT software stacks
  • Smart living and heathcare Frameworks, Platfoms and systems

The aim of this Special Issue is to include high quality and innovative scientific papers on the advances in the theory, frameworks, platfoms, systems and applications of the Internet of Things (IoT) in relation to the smart living and health systems. We invite industries, academia, researchers, experts and students to contribute in this special issue and to improve the quality of modern and smart systems.

Solving the vehicle routing problem (VRP) is one of the best-known optimization issues in the TLS (transport, logistic, spedition) branch market. Various variants of the VRP problem have been presented and discussed in the literature for many years. In most cases, batch versions of the problem are considered, wherein the complete data, including customers’ geographical distribution, is well known. In real-life situations, the data change dynamically, which influences the decisions made by optimization systems. The article focuses on the aspect of geopositioning updates and their impact on the effectiveness of optimization algorithms. Such updates affect the distance matrix, one of the critical datasets used to optimize the VRP problem. A demonstration version of the optimization system was developed, wherein updates are carried out in integration with both open source routing machine and GPS tracking services. In the case of a dynamically changing list of destinations, continuous and effective updates are required. Firstly, temporary values of the distance matrix based on the correction of the quasi-Euclidean distance were generated. Next, the impact of update progress on the proposed optimization algorithms was investigated. The simulation results were compared with the results obtained “manually” by experienced planners. It was found that the upload level of the distance matrix influences the optimization effectiveness in a non-deterministic way. It was concluded that updating data should start from the smallest values in the distance matrix. Full article

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an emerging field consisting of Internet-based globally connected network architecture. A subset of IoT is the Internet of Healthcare Things (IoHT) that consists of smart healthcare devices having significant importance in monitoring, processing, storing, and transmitting sensitive information. It is experiencing novel challenges regarding data privacy protection. This article discusses different components of IoHT and categorizes various healthcare devices based on their functionality and deployment. This article highlights the possible points and reasons for data leakage, such as conflicts in laws, the use of sub-standard devices, lack of awareness, and the non-availability of dedicated local law enforcement agencies. This article draws attention to the escalating demand for a suitable regulatory framework and analyzes compliance problems of IoHT devices concerning healthcare data privacy and protection regulations. Furthermore, the article provides some recommendations to improve the security and privacy of IoHT implementation. Full article
