Dear Colleagues,
Waste production and handling currently represents a key issue, and bio-waste represents a major problem due to the intrinsic characteristics of this product and due to the subsequent handling/processing strategies that need to be applied in order to fully develop and apply “closed-loop technical and biological cycles”. This concept, often described as CtoC (i.e. cradle-to-cradle), is not always practically easy to apply, despite the large amount of literature. This is particularly important with reference to bio-waste, which if not properly handled leads to greenhouse gas emissions, leaching and sanitary problems. On the other hand, bio-waste can represent a formidable source of renewable energy production, as well as for the production of new products ranging from organic fertilizers, bio-pesticides, bioplastics, biochar, etc. This Special Issue is addressed at exploring all these possibilities, providing a practical and comprehensive forum to exchange novel research approaches and implementation specifically addressed to bio-fuel, chemical and biochar production resulting from bio-waste products of different sources and origins.
The Special Issue encompasses theoretical, analytical, empirical research, comprehensive reviews of relevant research, conceptual frameworks, and case studies of effective applications in this area. Furthermore, the submission of contributions describing innovative strategies, both in terms of bio-waste handling and quality control actions applied to the resulting products is particularly encouraged.
