The New Era of Treatment for Obesity

Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, scientific research has led to a better understanding of the pathophysiology of obesity. Despite these advances and increasing treatment options, a significant percentage of patients with obesity do not respond to treatment. Given the growing number of people with overweight and obesity, and the enormous healthcare costs associated, it is crucial that new effective and safe therapies are introduced. It has recently been discovered that the microbes residing in the human gastrointestinal tract act as an 'endocrine' organ, whose composition and functionality are a consequence of poor nutrition but, at the same time, may partly contribute to obesity. Bariatric surgery has also emerged in recent years as a valuable therapeutic option, especially in severely obese individuals and/or those with serious complications.  Similarly, new drugs for treating obesity have been proposed, but their use is still limited by modest efficacy, safety issues, and, in particular, high costs. Other possible therapies to be considered could be nutraceuticals and new dietary proposals.

The aim of this special issue is to evaluate new, scientifically validated treatment options that could represent a significant breakthrough in the treatment of obesity
