Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We have been observing the intensive development of digitization processes and technologies supporting them for several years. Digital transformation is one of the key trends, the development of which has a significant impact on the current functioning of enterprises and supply chains and the future directions of changes and investments.

Digitalization is not only a process of technology adoption but, above all, a fundamental change taking place in organizational strategy, organizational knowledge and business processes. It also supports the integration of business management structures, cooperation and coordination in supply chains. Digitization is now a trend that forces enterprises and supply chains to adapt and improve their digital capabilities in every respect: (1) technological changes, (2) organizational changes, (3) process digitization and (4) forces the development of specialized capabilities in an organization's employees and workers. Digital transformation is also perceived as a trend supporting the sustainable development of organizations and supply chains, e.g., new initiatives related to the development of the circular economy or smarter products and services, which reduce environmental impacts. On the other hand, some studies show the negative impact of Industry 4.0 on the environment: (1) the generation of large amounts of e-waste; (2) absorbing more and more materials, which speeds up the depletion of natural resources; (3) high energy consumption; and (4) large emissions generated by data centers. Therefore, research on the impact of digitization on sustainable development should focus on both positive and negative effects. Therefore, the emergence of digitization in the logistics and supply chain industry needs to be given more attention, too.

This Special Issue on “Sustainable Development of Logistics and Supply Chain Management in the Digital Transformation Era” intends to collect the newest studies in the field.

Potential contributions may include but should not be limited to theoretical papers and/or quantitative studies and/or case studies. With this in mind, we invite theoretical and empirical research able to investigate a variety of lines of inquiry, including:

The transition to more eco-friendly forms of transport is one of the main challenges for the Polish economy in the coming decades. Poland, as a member of the European Union, must adapt to the requirements regarding, in particular, reducing carbon dioxide emissions related to new vehicles. The implementation of these changes will require significant financial outlays and structural reconstruction of transport (both public and private), as well as remodeling of the functioning and habits of society. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the challenges of the green transformation of transport in Poland. The following research methods were used: desk research, focus interview–expert research, and an original approach to the use of SWOT analysis. Based on the conducted analyses, Poland’s strategic position in the context of the “transport greening” process was determined. The strategy is in line with the concept of “reorganization”, calling for a thorough restructuring of the development strategy. This entails coordinated efforts, such as conducting in-depth evaluations of current strategies, securing increased funding, providing support for research, and implementing public education initiatives. In essence, the study emphasizes the necessity for significant endeavors to effectively manage the green transition of transportation in Poland. Full article

A prominent research area pertains to the integration of digital technologies in corporate frameworks and their strategic utilization. In particular, as both intercompany dependencies in business activities and environmental uncertainty increase, digital transformation has become an important means of managing transaction relationships not only within but also between companies. The purpose of this study is to explicate the process of how digital transformation technology used among supply chain members can improve corporate performance and to identify the influencing variables for making good use of it. The findings have implications that can help companies invest time and money in digital innovation to achieve effective corporate performance. This research model analyzed data from 222 domestic manufacturing companies through structural equation model analysis. We found that the more developed the corporate culture and the higher the trust with partner companies, the more active the companies are in utilizing digital transformation. In addition, while digital transformation has a direct impact on corporate performance, we also confirmed the mediating effect of information sharing between companies, which can have a greater positive impact on corporate performance as its level increases. A notable result is that digital transformation significantly improves information sharing in low-trust corporate relationships. These results suggest that digital, non-face-to-face technologies can complement and strengthen relationships that have traditionally been formed through interpersonal relationships. This study compensates for the shortcomings of previous studies that verify the fragmentary achievements of digital transformation. It also has theoretical significance in that it hypothesizes and demonstrates the entire process of how digital transformation is activated in what type of environment and leads to corporate performance. In addition, although companies with a strong relationship of trust may find it easy to invest in innovation, there are practical implications that even new companies that do not have a relationship of trust should consider active use of digital transformation when conducting important transactions. How Do Uncertainties Affect Supply-Chain Resilience? The Moderating Role of Information Sharing for Sustainable Supply-Chain Management

Uncertainties caused by many internal and external factors can lead to supply-chain disruptions, increasing the vulnerability and cost of operations. In particular, the COVID-19 pandemic, whose worldwide emergence was not foreseen, has become a major threat to supply-chain resilience and has caused the disruption of global network connections. The purpose of this study is to examine in depth the impact of uncertainty on supply-chain resilience and to determine whether information sharing has a moderating effect on this interaction. The relationships proposed in the research model are tested through empirical analyses in SEM applied to 244 survey data points from internationally operating manufacturing firms in Turkey. The findings reveal several key insights. First, it is concluded that all dimensions of uncertainty, except technological uncertainty, negatively affect supply-chain resilience. Second, although no direct effect of technological uncertainty on supply-chain resilience is found, technological uncertainty has a negative effect on resilience when the moderating role of internal and supplier information sharing is taken into account. Low-level information sharing, as opposed to high-level, creates variation in the severity of supply-chain resilience at different levels of technological uncertainty. In addition, it is worth noting that a high level of information sharing with suppliers under high-uncertainty conditions negatively affects supply-chain resilience. The results of this study, conducted within the framework of the Contingent Resource-Based Theory, demonstrate compatibility with the theory. Based on all the findings, this study suggests that managers should adopt proactive strategies to maintain high supply-chain resilience, considering today’s highly uncertain conditions. Full article
