Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sport is a major contributor to social and economic development. The role of sport is recognized by local and national authorities in most of countries worldwide. The Political Declaration of the 2030 Agenda highlighted “the contribution sports make to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities, as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.” The industry in which people, activities, businesses, and organizations are involved in producing, facilitating, promoting, or organizing any activity, experience, or business enterprise focused on sports creates the market in which the businesses or products offered to their buyers are sports-related and may be goods, services, people, places, or ideas. According to the Eurostat yearbook 2019, the sports industry has grown exponentially over the last two decades when compared to other industries, representing the 6th largest global growth at the industrial level. The future development seemed to be guaranteed; however, since 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread to almost all countries of the world, upending all areas of life and making no exception for sports. Social and physical distancing measures, as well as lockdowns of businesses, schools and overall social life, which have become commonplace to curtail the spread of the disease, have disrupted many regular aspects of life. The impact of COVID-19 on society was unexpected, including its impacts on activities within the sports industry, and this Special Issue aims to investigate pre-pandemic and pandemic issues to anticipate solutions to mitigate the negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic through a wide range of interdisciplinary and international perspectives, and to promote the future perspectives, challenges, new concepts and necessities within sport industry to solve eventual future uncertainty.

This Special Issue aims to develop knowledge and an understanding of future perspectives, challenges, new concepts and necessities within the sport industry to help students, academics and practitioner professors who are interested in knowing more about the new concepts in the sport industry in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. It thus aims to help identify possible solutions and strategies that provide a transition from the current situation to one that promises secure sustainability of the sport industry in the long term. Specifically, this Special Issue calls for research related, but not limited, to the following questions: What impact is the current social transition having on the sport industry? How will the current social transition affect sport business exchange and extensive networking in the long term?

The development of a high-quality sports industry is crucial to China’s economic growth. This research quantitatively analyzed factors influencing the development of the sports industry for the period 2010–2019. The study selected variables pertaining to the gross national income per capita (X1), household final consumption expenditure per capita (X2), sports population (X3), number of fitness venues and facilities (X4), number of sporting events (X5), and number of sports-related business registrations (X6) and analyzed their relationship with the value added to the sports industry. By developing a ridge regression model, it can be determined that correlations (Pearson’s r) between six factors and the value added to the sports industry were all greater than 0.90, and that each factor had a positive impact on the industry (p < 0.05). After standardizing the ridge regression model with the z-score method, it was determined that the degree of influence of the six factors varied: X2ridge = 0.156), X3ridge = 0.153) and X5ridge = 0.153), X1ridge = 0.151), X4ridge = 0.136), and X6ridge = 0.121). The ridge regression model can give a reference model for predicting and optimizing the sustainable development of the sports industry in China. Full article
