Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

For the last two decades, the topic of sustainable supply chain and logistics management has attracted considerable interest from academics and practitioners. The sustainable supply chain is demonstrated as a complex network system that involves diverse entities and pursues three pillars of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social). Sustainable logistics connects the entities of the supply chain and maintains its sustainability.

Noticeably, technological advances and idea innovations play crucial roles in improving supply chain and logistics sustainability. With an electric motor instead of an internal combustion engine, electric vehicles emit no exhaust from a tailpipe. This technology can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality during the transportation of goods. The closed-loop supply chain combines the forward supply chain with reverse logistics and recovers value from used products while creating as little waste as possible. This idea reshapes the structure of sustainable supply chains. Recently, this trend has been widening. The development of emerging technologies, industry 4.0, Internet of Things, and artificial intelligence is offering new opportunities to develop more sustainability for supply chain and logistics management.

The aims of this Special Issue are (1) to deliver a deeper understanding of state-of-the-art sustainable practices from different sectors—manufacturing, transportation, health care, etc.; (2) to provide up-to-date management insights for sustainable operations through different decision levels—vehicle routing problem, smart warehouse design, industrial ecology optimization, etc.; and (3) to explore the frontier of sustainable innovations by employing different technologies—renewable energy, shore power, blockchain, etc.

This Special Issue is devoted to publishing the latest significant original articles and reviews related to those purposes mentioned above. Potential topics include but are not limited to:

  • New optimization approaches for sustainable supply chain and logistics management;
  • New technology innovations for sustainable supply chain and logistics management;
  • Data-driven sustainable supply chain and logistics management;
  • Green transportation management and optimization;
  • Sustainable supply chain finance.

This study aims to predict new technologies by analyzing patent data and identifying key technology trends using a Temporal Network. We have chosen big data-based smart logistics technology as the scope of our analysis. To accomplish this, we first extract relevant patents by identifying technical keywords from prior literature and industry reports related to smart logistics. We then employ a technology prospect analysis to assess the innovation stage. Our findings indicate that smart logistics technology is in a growth stage characterized by continuous expansion. Moreover, we observe a future-oriented upward trend, which quantitatively confirms its classification as a hot technology domain. To predict future advancements, we establish an IPC Temporal Network to identify core and converging technologies. This approach enables us to forecast six innovative logistics technologies that will shape the industry’s future. Notably, our results align with the logistics technology roadmaps published by various countries worldwide, corroborating our findings’ reliability. The methodology presents in this research provides valuable data for developing R&D strategies and technology roadmaps to advance the smart logistics sector. Full article

The battery electric passenger vehicle (BEPV) has the potential to conserve electric energy and reduce carbon emissions, making it an effective tool for achieving low-carbon development in the road transport industry by replacing the internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV). Several factors, such as comprehensive electricity power generation efficiency, proportion of thermal power, vehicle technical performance, regional mileage credibility and low temperature, affect the BEPV’s electricity energy consumption and carbon emissions. In this study, an electricity conservation index model and a carbon emission reduction index model for multilevel BEPVs are established to evaluate their capabilities of electricity energy conservation and carbon emissions reduction, considering the electricity supply chain, including the generation and transmission of electricity. The research shows that the electricity energy conservation ability of BEPVs is not outstanding, but their carbon emissions reduction ability is strong. When the composition of energy for electricity generation is transformed from 2025 to 2035, with a 10% increase in comprehensive electricity generation efficiency, all levels of BEPVs show fruitful electricity energy conservation ability. When the proportion of thermal power decreases to 10%, the carbon emissions reduction is exponentially reduced to 1/25 to 1/30 of ICEV’s total carbon emissions. However, the regional mileage credibility weakens the BEPVs’ ability to save energy and reduce emissions in most Chinese provinces except for the southwest and the south regional provinces, where the regional mileage credibility parameter can increase the energy conservation and carbon emission reduction performance of A00+A0 level BEPV. Low temperatures make BEPV models lose their electricity energy conservation advantage, but most models still have the characteristic of carbon emissions reduction. On this basis, the electricity energy consumption and carbon emissions of all BEPV models are higher than those of ICEVs when the low temperature endurance mileage accuracy is added. Full article

To explore the impact of green financial policy on the regional economic development level and the Air Quality Index (AQI), this paper selected two pilot regions of green financial reform policy to construct a quasi-experiment in Zhejiang Province. The results show that green finance reform can reduce AQI and pass the parallel trend test and placebo test, showing strong stability. Mechanism analysis shows that green finance reform can improve environmental quality mainly by increasing urban expenditure on science and technology, the level of urban innovation, and the number of urban enterprise innovations. Then, from a more general perspective, this paper discusses the internal relationship between green finance policy, environmental pollution and its control, and enterprise development and puts forward suggestions for future green finance policy formulation and policy implementation. BOPS (Buy Online, Pick up in Store) is a popular channel strategy that plays an important role in promoting the sustainable development of omni-channel retailing. Focusing on consumer’s sustainable usage intention of BOPS service, this paper uses a Technology Acceptance Mode (TAM) framework to investigate how the channel integration quality influences the willingness to adopt BOPS service from four dimensions: channel service transparency, channel choice breadth, content consistency, and process consistency. Our findings support previous research in the TAM field, as perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use strongly affect consumer’s favorable attitude towards BOPS service. The pivotal roles of channel service transparency and process consistency in the formation of BOPS using intention is verified, as they both have positive effect on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. However, channel choice breadth indirectly affects the sustainable usage intention of BOPS through perceived usefulness but has no significant effect on perceived usefulness. In addition, content consistency positively affects perceived ease of use, but the diversity of channels does not necessarily make consumers find BOPS more useful. On this basis, the implications of BOPS service management are discussed. Full article

Anthropogenic emissions increase the concentration of greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, which necessitates the promotion of environmental protection as one of the most urgent tasks of European environmental policy. The reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the development of clean technologies in production also depends on the impact of environmental taxation; in this regard, a methodology for analyzing its impact and assessment on the development of eco-friendly technologies is proposed. An analysis of environmental tax revenues to the budgets of the EU countries revealed the insufficiency of environmental revenues to cover the costs of environmental protection from the damage caused by greenhouse gas emissions, which requires the transformation of the system of fiscal mechanisms. The total receipts of all environmental taxes in the EU budget for the period 2000–2020 increased by 53%, and the receipts from taxes on greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere increased by 71% in the EU budget, with a tax rate increase of 1.5-fold over this period. The application of the proposed methodology made it possible to determine, on the basis of the correlation coefficient, a high connection strength of +0.971 for the period 2000–2020 between the receipts of the environmental tax for greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere and the total values of all environmental taxes, as well as a fairly strong feedback of +0.913 from the receipts of the environmental tax to the EU budget with gross domestic product. Therefore, it is proposed to use differentiated environmental tax rates for different stages of the development of clean technologies. Full article

Over the past decades, the store brand has undergone a key change and achieved a remarkable improvement. Based on the industry observations, there is a wide belief that the retailers are more and more inclining to add values that cater to the consumers into their store brands. The green store brand, one kind of the burgeoning store brands, has been introduced by many retailers recently. In this paper, we investigate the conditions for retailer to introduce a green store brand and the impacts of supply chain power structure on the retailer’s product strategy. We built and solved six game models with respect to three supply chain power structures with and without the green store brand. The results show that: (i) the threshold to introduce the green store brand is lowest in RS power structure while highest in VN power structure, and the thresholds to only sell the green store brand under different power structures are the same; (ii) the green store brand may be introduced as a profitable product that has the real sale or just a threatening tool to compel the manufacturer to make a concession in wholesale price; (iii) once the green store brand is introduced, it is always detrimental to the manufacturer regardless of power structure; (iv) the green store brand can alleviate the double marginalization effect with respect to the national brand in most cases but aggravate it if the power structure is RS, and the ratio of potential margin is relatively low. Aiming at the problem of pilotage disruption under high wind control, this paper provides statistics on wind direction and wind levels during high wind control days, measures pilotage disruption at Yangshan Port for a total of ten years (from 2011 to 2020), notes the wind direction and wind levels that trigger pilotage disruption, and models and analyzes the effects of different wind directions and wind-level coupling on pilotage disruption. In addition, the difference of traffic flow in the alert area under normal and interrupted conditions of pilotage is analyzed by combining pilotage interruption data and the observation data of the alert area. The law of traffic volume and speed of container ships of different lengths is also analyzed. Based on the data of each observation line, the speed and time of ships in the warning area were evaluated by combining the speed, heading, and time from the records. The traffic law of different types of ships are summarized; that is, the ship’s speed in the caution area is roughly positively correlated with its length: the longer the ship’s length, the faster the ship’s speed, and the less the sailing time. The article provides a basis for the research of pilotage safety operations. Full article

The automotive industry is one of the most important economic sectors in the world. At the beginning, vehicles only had mechanical components, so the use of an automotive wire harness was not indispensable. Cars today are equipped with electronic components that, in addition to the basic operations of moving, turning, and stopping, perform more and more functions every day. Wiring harnesses are indispensable for controlling these electronic components. Automotive wiring harnesses have hundreds of variants, are principally manufactured with customized designs, and are measured specifically for each car. A large number of production variants increase labor hours, as well as rework, inventory, and manufacturing costs. Even when technologies exist to assist in the design of production lines, today, the design of production lines is mainly based on experience from previous cases. This paper aims to show how a discrete event simulation permits support for decision making for the proper design of assembly lines, as well as identifying possible unbalances in production lines and overloaded processes. In our work, we design and implement a discrete event simulation model of this production using the SimPy Python library. Finally, a case study in the automotive sector is presented, a production week is simulated, and the current plant configuration and possible improvement scenarios are analyzed. Full article

This paper proposes a new approach, i.e., virtual pooling, for optimising returnable transport item (RTI) flows in a two-level closed-loop supply chain. The supply chain comprises a set of suppliers delivering their products loaded on RTIs to a set of customers. RTIs are of various types. The objective is to model a deterministic, multi-supplier, multi-customer inventory routing problem with pickup and delivery of multi-RTI. The model includes inventory-level constraints, the availability of empty RTIs to suppliers, and the minimisation of the total cost, including inventory holding, screening, maintenance, transportation, sharing, and purchasing costs for new RTIs. Furthermore, suppliers with common customers coordinate to virtually pool their inventory of empty RTIs held by customers so that, when loaded RTIs are delivered to customers, each may benefit from this visit to pick up the empty RTI, regardless of the ownership. To handle the combinatorial complexity of the model, a new artificial-immune-system-based algorithm coupled with deep reinforcement learning is proposed. The algorithm combines artificial immune systems’ strong global search ability and a strong self-adaptability ability into a goal-driven performance enhanced by deep reinforcement learning, all tailored to the suggested mathematical model. Computational experiments on randomly generated instances highlight the performance of the proposed approach. From a managerial point of view, the results stress that this new approach allows for economies of scale and cost reduction at the level of all involved parties to about 40%. In addition, a sensitivity analysis on the unit cost of transportation and the procurement of new RTIs is conducted, highlighting the benefits and limits of the proposed model compared to dedicated and physical pooling modes. The logistics sector plays one of the most important roles in the supply chain with the aim of providing a fast, flexible, safe, economical, efficient, and environmentally acceptable performance of freight transport flows. In addition, the popularization of the concept of a circular economy (CE) used to retain goods, components, and materials at their highest usability and value at all times, illustrates the importance of the adequate performance of reverse logistics (RL) processes. However, traditional RL is unable to cope with the requirements of modern supply chains and requires the application of Industry 4.0 technologies, which would make it more efficient. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the applicability of various Industry 4.0 technologies in the RL sector in order to point out the most applicable ones. To solve the defined problem, a novel multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) model was defined by combining the best—worst method (BWM) to obtain the criteria weights, and the newly developed comprehensive distance-based ranking (COBRA) method to rank the technologies. Another aim of the study was to validate the newly established method. The results indicated that the most applicable technologies were the Internet of Things, cloud computing, and electronic—mobile marketplaces. These technologies will have a significant impact on the development of RL and the establishment of CE systems, thus bringing about all the related positive effects. Full article

COVID-19 has created a strong demand for supply chain finance (SCF) for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, the rapid development of SCF leads to more complex credit risks. How to effectively discriminate and manage SMEs to reduce credit risk has become one of the most critical issues in SCF. In addition, sustainable SCF (SSCF) has received increasing attention, and credit risk management is important to achieve SSCF. Therefore, it is significant to identify the key factors influencing the credit risk of SMEs and construct a prediction model to promote SSCF. This study uses the lasso-logistic model to identify factors influencing the credit risk of SMEs and to predict the credit risk of SMEs. The empirical results show that (i) the key factors influencing SMEs’ credit risk include six variables—the matching degree of order data, ratio of contract enforcement, number of contract defaults, degree of business concentration, and number of administrative penalties; and (ii) the lasso-logistic model can identify the key factors influencing credit risk and have a better prediction performance. Moreover, transaction credit and reputation supervision significantly influence the credit risk of SMEs. Full article

Motivated by the industrial observation that the e-commerce platform marketplaces (e.g., Amazon) are increasingly launching sustainable strategies, this study aims to build an analytical framework to guide managers on making sustainable decisions. This study builds a stylized game-theoretical model in the sustainable supply chain context, where the competitive traditional product manufacturers sell their products through the platform’s marketplace, while the platform decides whether to introduce the green products and the pricing strategy. We find that, when the evaluation difference for the green product is sufficiently low, the introduction of the green product by the platform benefits the manufacturers (or third-party sellers). Interestingly, a higher platform fee makes a higher likelihood of a win-win situation between the platform and manufacturers. Moreover, when consumers value green products sufficiently higher than traditional products, the traditional products’ manufacturers can also benefit from the green product entry. Full article

Streets functioning as important components of urban public space are not only the primary carriers of traffic but also essential spaces for individuals’ daily activities, including recreation and communication. The paper highlights the social characteristics of streets by integrating them into one single index of vitality. The application of open recourse data combined with empirical research forms the foundation of a quantitative exploration on the street vitality of Zhoujiadu Community in Shanghai. Supported by the ideology of street urbanism, this paper defines the concept of “street vitality”, and then constructs a quantitative evaluation index system. Afterwards, a multiple linear regression model is developed to explore the main influential factors of street vitality. This work evidences the relationship between the environment and citizens’ activities and is beneficial to the potential improvement of street space quality and the enhancement of streets with higher vitality. Results from this work proved that the constituent factors of social function density, mixing degree of social functions, distance from the nearest subway station and green view have strong impacts on street vitality, among which the social function density and mixing degree of social functions are paramount.
