Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

By 2050, the world population is expected to increase and agriculture will need to produce about 60% more food globally. The agricultural sector is the largest user of water resources, accounting for roughly 70% of all freshwater withdrawals and water demand will increase significantly over the coming decades. In order to reduce the gap between supply and demand for food, several actions have to be undertaken.

On the other hand, the quantity of wastewater produced and its overall pollution load are increasing worldwide. Over 80% of the world’s wastewater is released to the environment without treatment.

According to the principles of circular economy, wastewater should be considered not as a waste but a very important resource. Treated municipal wastewater could be an alternative and sustainable source of water and nutrients, a solution to address water growing scarcity.

This special issue aims to investigate the effects of wastewater reuse in agriculture (strategy of irrigation and fertilization, yield and quality), with a particular focus on unexplored and new topics (i.e. Contaminants of Emerging Concern - CECs, microplastics, shifts in microbial community of plant and soil) related to wastewater management in order to increase knowledge on this issue and assure a safe reuse of wastewater for human and environmental health.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
