Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Digitalization and sustainability are both important and interrelated in contemporary entrepreneurship (Bican and Brem, 2020; Gavrila and Ancillo, 2021). They are both mega trends that are bringing about changes in the ways of doing business, for both new and established business, now and in the future. Both digital entrepreneurship (Nambisan, 2017) and sustainable entrepreneurship (Cohen and Winn, 2007) provide distinct and timely perspectives from which entrepreneurship and management can be explored. However, we do not know how these forces collide, converge or disrupt, e.g., markets, competences, business models, networks and/or opportunities. Recently, researchers (Gupta, S., Motlagh, M., and Rhyner, J. 2020; Kiron and Unruh, 2018, Lichtenthaler, 2021) are debating whether sustainability and digitalization in combination can have positive as well as negative impacts on business, social and environmental levels. How do entrepreneurs, owner-managers or innovators balance these forces within the firm, network and/or ecosystem development? Likewise, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are faced with different requirements for sustainability and responsibility compared to large corporations (Murrillo and Lozano, 2006; Uzhegova et al., 2019), and there is still relatively little known regarding the role of sustainability and sustainable management in SMEs. Multidisciplinary research contributions such as this Special Issue are much-needed in era of sustainable entrepreneurship and digitalization, since they can contribute with timely, relevant and high-quality knowledge in research, practice and/or policy development.

This Special Issue invites theoretical, conceptual, and empirical papers that shed light on the role of digitalization and/or sustainability in entrepreneurship and management of SMEs; both original research articles and reviews are welcome. Studies employing quantitative or qualitative methods are welcome, as are mixed methods studies. Cross-country comparative studies as well as studies on entrepreneurial internationalization are welcome. Topics include but are not limited to:

  • The role of sustainability and business responsibility in management and internationalization of SMEs;
  • Business models and business model innovation in digital and sustainable entrepreneurship;
  • The characteristics of sustainable and digital entrepreneurship and management in domestic and international entrepreneurial domains;
  • Capabilities related to sustainable and digital entrepreneurship;
  • The role of networks in sustainable and digital entrepreneurship management;
  • Ecosystems in sustainable and digital entrepreneurship management;
  • Social and environmental entrepreneurship management.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

The adoption and usage of digital technologies is considered one of the most promising transformations for sustainability, and sustainable entrepreneurship is considered key for providing solutions for the grand social and environmental challenges. The purpose of our study is to shed light on the role of digital technologies in value creation, value delivery, and value capture within the business models of sustainable entrepreneurship. This is important for understanding how digital technologies leverage sustainability. In fact, we have little knowledge on the impact of digital technologies within the business models of sustainable entrepreneurship. We studied the adoption and usage of digital technologies within the business models of 10 born-sustainable new ventures in Mexico applying a comparative case study approach. We found that context matters. Extant research claims that digital technologies promote social inclusion, increase connectivity, and lead to broader stakeholder integration. Despite these claims, this is the most challenging part for entrepreneurs. Our main findings, therefore, emphasize the constraints of the implementation of digital technologies within sustainable business models. This adds to the academic discourse a cross-geographic perspective from the Global South. Full article

Network data maps constitute a practical visual data-classification tool in structuring complex research literature endowed with multiple economic, social, and psychological relationships, as happens with the evolution of digital entrepreneurship as a research topic in the COVID-19 era. Has the digitalization process, accelerated by COVID-19, influenced entrepreneurship by strengthening digital entrepreneurship worldwide? Is innovation the most-cited keyword in the digital entrepreneurship-related literature published in the SCOPUS database from 2001 onwards? Does pay-per-click as an instrument for digital entrepreneurship management foster sustainable development? To answer these questions, we combine a software tool for constructing and visualizing bibliometric networks, VOSviewer version 1.6.18, with the SCOPUS bibliographic data tool to investigate the keyword ‘digital entrepreneurship.’ As a result, we obtained 2154 documents in the SCOPUS database for 2001–2022 in all 27 subject areas, of which 1055 documents were from BMA (Business, Management, and Accounting) and EEF (Economics, Econometrics, and Finance) areas. Regarding the keyword ‘pay-per-click,’ we obtained 63 papers for 2005–2022 from BMA and EEF subject areas. We find that there is a growing interest in researching digital entrepreneurship led by authors from the European Union and followed by the United States; innovation is the most-cited keyword in documents related to digital entrepreneurship, and researchers worldwide are giving more importance to the process of digitalization compared to the link between educational, economic, and technological factors and digital entrepreneurship. Regarding ‘pay-per-click,’ we find that the literature published on this topic is broadly based on the US, and given the small number of publications on this issue, it is a research area with great potential to investigate and publish about it. Not only was Digital Transformation (DT) accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, but over recent years some companies have already developed actions related to DT. It is well known that DT has many benefits, such as improving business models, making communication channels more efficient and facilitating decision-making. Furthermore, amongst others, one big challenge of DT is to contribute to areas related to sustainability. The objective of this article is to offer an exploratory review of how a small sample of leading Mexican companies have used DT as an enabler to be more efficient in some sustainability-related issues. The companies analyzed in this paper belong to different sectors: communication services, retail, financial, food and beverages, and materials. Through the identification of DT initiatives and implementations across time, a radar chart was constructed in order to identify, as a first approach, those related to sustainability in order to identify evidence of what some companies are doing in this regard. In addition, actions were grouped under the Business Dimensions defined by Deloitte Development LLC in order to emphasize the focus given by the organizations. One of the main conclusions from the evidence is that indeed big companies have a digital strategy agenda but not necessarily related to sustainability, but also that it is collaterally affected positively due to the economies of scale and operational improvements, from DT. This a qualitative primary study that can be reinforced in the future with analytical evidence that can measure impacts, effects, etc., to enrich strategies that relate to both DT and sustainability. With the rise of digital transformation in all domains, the relationship between digitalization and sustainable entrepreneurship has received growing attention. In practice, a new sustainable entrepreneurial model called “digital sustainable entrepreneurship” (DSE) has emerged. Aiming to establish a DSE model based on digital capability (DC) and digital innovation orientation (DIO), this study explored what kind of digital capability could be built to lead to a boost in digital sustainable entrepreneurship, to realize the creation of social and environmental value. We also revealed how DC affected DSE by introducing DIO and discussed the moderating role played therein by the manager’s cognition of sustainable opportunities (MCSO). The study adopted CFA and SEM on the model using AMOS 27.0 and used the multiple regression analysis method to conduct an empirical study into the data from 308 SMEs in pollutive industries to validate the research framework. The results show a positive relationship between DC and DSE; DC is positively correlated to DIO; DIO is positively correlated to DSE; DIO plays a partial mediating role between DC and DSE; and MCSO positively moderates the relationship among DC, DIO, and DSE. This study will be of practical significance regarding how sustainable entrepreneurs can boost digital sustainable entrepreneurship. Full article
